Early on August 15, a powerful explosion rocked the outskirts of the town of Ruhaybah which is located some 50 kilometers to the northeast of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Video footage of the explosion surfaced on social media. However, the official Syrian Arab News Agency didn’t report the incident.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a pro-opposition monitoring group, said in a report that the explosion emanated from a missile depot that belongs to the 81st Brigade of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) 3rd division. The group added that the explosion resulted in casualties, but didn’t provide any details.

In its report, the SOHR also alleged that Hezbollah stores ammunition, including missiles, in the depots of the 81st Brigade and other nearby bases of the SAA.

The explosion near Ruhaybah came less than 48 hours after a series of blasts that rocked the western suburbs of Damascus.

Back then, the SOHR reported that the blasts were the result of a missile strike that targeted an ammunition depot of Hezbollah. However, the group dismissed its own claims of a missile strike in a later report, hinting that sabotage may have been the cause of the blasts.

The SOHR’s claims on the two recent incidents are incoherent and questionable to say the least. However, it is very possible that the incidents were the result of an Israeli attack or sabotage.

Israel carried out hundreds of attacks against Syria in recent years as a part of a covert military campaign called “the war between the wars” that is meant to prevent Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from establishing a lasting presence in the country or smuggling advanced weapons to Hezbollah.
