On October 31, a meeting of the Primates of Churches of the East took place at at the Hungarian Foreign Affairs Ministry in Budapest. The meeting took place during an official visit of the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, His Beatitude John X to Hungary.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Minister Peter Szijjarto raised concers over the persecution faced by Christians in the Middle East and added that Budapest is making efforts to support the ancient Christian communities there.
During the visit to Hungary, His Beatitude John X also met with Hungarian ministers and office-holders, as well as with the Primates of the major Christian denominations in the central European country. He also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who at the same time was on an official visit to the country, with the latter conveying the best wishes of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, His Holiness Kirill.
“…The Middle East is the cradle of Christianity, and Christians are in peril there, facing persecution, being killed, raped and robbed. Russia will do everything to protect Christians in the Middle East. We must help them restore and preserve their holy sites, preserve their congregations,” Putin said noting the importance of the efforts by the Hungarian side.
The actions of the Primates of Churches of the East with help from Hungary and Russia demonistrate a strong difference between their approach and actions of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople that is mostly focused on pursuing own political goals rather than defending the unity of the Christian World.
