In an unusual incident, fighters from the National Defense Forces (NDF) opened fire on April 4 at a patrol of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) security agency, Asayish, in the border city of al-Qamishli.
According to several sources, an operative of the Asayish was killed as a result of the incident, while another sustained serious injures.
In an official statement, Asayish condemned the “coward, criminal act,” holding pro-government forces responsible for the incident.
“Today, Saturday April 4, members of the Syrian regime targeted a military vehicle of our forces which was on a joint patrol with a vehicle of the al-Shaab Municipality in the city of Qamishli, it was carrying a number of cleaning workers and escorted by a car working in the medical field for emergency cases,” the statement reads.
A unit of the Russian Police was quickly dispatched to the incident site to de-escalate the situation. Thanks to Russian efforts, the situation in al-Qamishli is now calm again.
Al-Qamishli witnessed several incidents over the last few years. In September of 2018, a similar incident developed into clashes, which claimed the lives of 18 personnel of the SDF and the Syrian intelligence. Such incidents are usually the result of personal disagreements or lack of coordination.
The new incident will not likely affect the military cooperation between Damascus and the SDF. Both sides appear to be interested in maintain strong relations, as for now at least.
well done
Ever wondered the US and Turkish profound inability to de-escalate anything? While Russian forces are experts at deescalating?
The US do great as well, its just propaganda that says otherwise. Both nations do well at combating terrorism.
My boys in the Sootoro keepin’ it real
Shouldn’t the be working together. Turkey wants to kill them both and it seems counter productive to be fighting one another.
