Kurdish activists and observers shared an image on social media showing a Turkish T-155 Fırtına self-propelled howitzer that had been allegedly destroyed with a Russian-made Metis-M anti-tank guided missile (ATGM).

While several sources claimed that the missile was recently fired by Kurdish forces in northeast Syria, the image was tracked back all the way to April of 2016.

The T-155 Fırtına was indeed destroyed by a Metis-M. However, it was launched by ISIS terrorists, who were attacking the Turkish Armed Forces back then.

The Metis-M is an advanced Russian variant of the original Metis, developed in the Soviet Union. The missile, which is guided by semi-automatic command to line of sight (SACLOS), has a range 1.5 km and can penetrate 800 mm of rolled homogeneous armour (RHA) behind explosive reactive armour (ERA).

Turkey developed the T-155 Fırtına in cooperation with South Korea’s Samsung Techwin. The howitzer, which is designed after the South Korean K9 Thunder, uses the same 155/52 caliber gun and automatic ammunition feeding mechanism.
