Sheikh Muhammad Adnan al-Afyouni, a prominent pro-government scholar, was assassinated near the Syrian capital Damascus.
An improvised explosive device, which had been planted under the Sheikh’s SUV, blew up in the late hours of October 22. The Sheikh was severally wounded in the attack and was pronounced dead short after by the Syrian state TV. The well-planned attacks took place near Al Sahabah Mosque in the northern Damascus suburb of Qudssaya.

Al-Afyouni was the Grand Mufti of Damascus and its countryside. The late Sheikh was also a chairman of the Awqaf Ministry’s Islamic Jurisprudence Council and the head of al-Sham International Islamic Center for Countering Extremism.
During the war, al-Afyouni played a key role in a number of reconciliation agreements between the government and Damascus rebels, especially in Eastern Ghouta and Darayya.

No group has claimed responsibility for the assassination, thus far. Attacks on moderate Islamic figures are usually carried out by radical groups, like ISIS.
The assassination of Sheikh al-Afyouni was clearly meant as a message to the government as well as to moderate Islamic seculars throughout Syria.

The other Clerics know exactly who’s responsible for the assassination, they unlike many SF readers know exactly who’s behind this latest attack, this cleric calls it the way it really is, and as I keep pointing out so does Assad, he keeps saying exactly the same thing too, it’s the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood = Al Qaeda, Al Nusra front, Turkish backed terrorists, Turkish backed moderate opposition, Isis, Turkish backed foreign terrorists fighting in Libya and Azerbaijan, but it DOESN’T include HTS, HTS is actually at war with the Muslim Brotherhood, so don’t confuse the 2 groups. On the Assassination of Shaykh M. Adnan Afyouni, the Mufti of Damascus
We just received the sad news that Shaykh Muhammad Adnan al-Afyouni, the Mufti of Damascus has been martyred. He was assassinated by a car bomb. We pray that Allah have mercy upon him and forgive him, and place him in the Heavens.
We have known him as a righteous scholar, an upright preacher and an eloquent speaker. With his death, Damascus lost one of its luminous dedicated scholars.
We denounce this heinous crime, through which terrorists are targeting the Sunni Ulema. We emphasise that difference of opinion or political stance does not make it legal to shed the blood of the opponent thinker, scholars and writers. Thoughts should be countered by thoughts, and words refuted by words.
There are secretive organisations that see violence as a valid means to power, such as ‘the Muslim Brotherhood’ that embraced the method of takfir and adopted violence as means via sleeping apparatuses and cells. They hijacked the uprising of our people in Syria and caused them more suffering and pain.
In as much as we denounce the crimes and atrocities of the Syrian regime, and condemn the position of the Ulema who support it, we denounce the crimes of murders and assassinations of innocent people, civilians and scholars that the terrorist organisations do. These terrorist organisations such as ISIS or JN would not have found a ground in Syria without the full support of the Muslim Brotherhood, who took over the institutions of the Syrian opposition and controlled them and stole the hopes of our people and are feeding on its suffering.
May Allah have mercy upon shaykh Muhammad Adnan al-Afyouni, may Allah reward him for the good he did, and forgive him and us for our shortcomings, and we hope he be given the rank of a martyr.
May Allah have mercy on the hundreds of thousands of Syrians who died under torture in the prisons of the Syrian regime, and those who were killed by ISIS and JN and other terrorist groups in the name of Islam, yet Islam has nothing to do with the actions of both sides.
We present our sincerest condolences to the Abu Nour Assembly in Damascus, to the Family of the late shaykh and to his students. And we pray that Allah remove the calamity of Syrian people and grant them relief.
