Update (2130ET): Saturday BLM protests unfolded across the country on Saturday, with tensions flaring in major cities including Portland, Seattle, Chicago and Louisville, Kentucky.
In Seattle, the police department – which on Friday announced that they would effectively not be enforcing the law due to a City Council ban on the use of non-lethal crowd control measures – declared a riot, citing “ongoing damage and public safety risks,” according to USA Today. 16 protesters were arrested by Seattle PD for assaulting officers, obstruction and failure to disperse. One officer was hospitalized with a leg injury caused by an explosive, while the crowd launched mortars and rocks at the police.

In Chicago, hundreds of protesters called for abolishing ICE and defunding the police, while chants of “Black women matter” and “Latino lives matter” could be heard.

Meanwhile, dozens of pro-police protesters gathered in Grant Park, where Mayor Lori Lightfoot removed a statue of Christopher Columbus on Friday morning before dawn. Attendees of the “Back the Blue” rally could be heard chanting “We love CPD,” as counter-protesters gathered across the street.
And In Louisville, tensions almost spilled over into violence as two opposing and heavily armed militia groups faced off within yards of each other downtown.
More than 300 members of the Atlanta-based Black militia NFAC, or “Not F**king Around Coalition” came to Louisville demanding justice for 26-year-old Breonna Taylor, an ER technician who was fatally shot by officers in March.
The group came close to 50 far-right “Three Percenter” militia members, who were also heavily armed. Police kept the sides apart and tensions eventually dissipated. Both militias had said they wanted to avoid violence.

The Seattle Police Department announced on Friday that residents and business owners are essentially on their own, after the City Council banned the use of pepper spray and other ‘less lethal tools’ to disperse crowds.
“Simply put, the legislation gives officers NO ability to safely intercede to preserve property in the midst of a large, violent crowd,” reads a letter from Seattle Chief of Police, Carmen Best – who added that thanks to the City Council, “Seattle Police will have an adjusted deployment in response to any demonstrations this weekend.”

The Portland-based Pacific Northwest (PNW) Youth Liberation Front – which describes itself as a “decentralized network of autonomous youth collectives dedicated to direct action towards total liberation,” has issued a call to action for other Antifa cells across the country on Saturday – calling it “J25” (July 25).
In a Facebook ‘call to action,’ the anarchist group writes:

You have two choices to avoid being dragged out of your vehicle and injured or killed if you get caught in one of these protests. One is to have a high ground clearance 4×4 that isn’t going to be stopped by protesters, the other is to carry a gun and start shooting threats that are in imminent danger of injuring or killing you.

There’s a large black community in southeast Seattle with no rioting or demonstrations. Their neighborhoods are untouched by the destruction. Monkeys and Guns are never a very sensible combination and ANY person with poor firearms training and use are de-facto monkeys.
I owned and used guns for my entire youth with no training, with my father and by myself. That might not have been the most responsible thing for my father to do. But he was a CIA attorney in their technology department doing patent law. Until they wanted to send him to Vietnam and he got out. I’ve been to CIA HQ in Langley, VA with him as a youth. Though that’s the extent of my CIA involvement. And I avoid them.
His position on gun safety was that his children were smart enough to use common sense and avoid doing something stupid. I never received formal firearms instruction until USMC basic training. And then 25 years later I spent a week at the Front Site Academy in NV learning defensive handgun use and law. And then a few years later hunter safety training to receive that certification. That I didn’t go through until I was after 50. 75% of my firearms training is self taught. That’s the way that it is with most people here.
Modern semi auto detachable magazine fed firearms are fairly complex pieces of equipment compared to single shot breach loading or bolt action guns. I can see someone unfamiliar with their operation easily making a mistake under a stressful situation. But that doesn’t excuse ignorance.
In this day and age with the internet. It’s easy to gain a basic understanding of guns with a few hours reading and watching videos. Anyone with a smartphone can get enough information on safe and proficient gun use with a few hours of reading and video watching. That combined with some hands on loading, unloading, and range use will get them up to speed on proper use practices.
I’m not against formal training. But not having it doesn’t excuse not being self taught when it’s easy to do so.
The basics are indeed common sense. Never carry a loaded gun thtil yoy want to use it. Never point a gun at a target you are NOT wishing to hit, even with blank rounds as there have been instances where a live round have been loaded in error . Always follow the correct procedure to clear the gun. Do not throw the gun around. Never handle a gun whilst drunk etc. In event of a ‘jam’ place the gun slowly on the ground and stand back one pace if asking for advice. When climbing obstacles in civilian use, always unload the gun first. These are just common sense basics but keeping to a routine is more likely to click in when under any stress.
When a jam occurs there is often the temptation to turn around with the weapon and say, My Guns Jammed :)
There’s a strong gun violence with a racial/gender/age group/location component here. White states have the highest gun ownership and lowest gun crime rates. Black people with guns outside of predominately black areas usually aren’t a problem. Male black youths/early middle age in some predominately black areas are exponentially more problematic than the rest of society. It isn’t all predominately black areas, but many of them have this problem.
This correlates with single (female) parent black families. I’m not a sociologist or criminologist. But my guess is that lowering the rate of single parent black families would also lower the rate of inner city black youth gun problems.
