On March 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a highly-anticipated meeting with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad in Moscow.

The Syrian president arrived in the Russian capital along with a large ministerial delegation a day earlier on his first extended visit to the country in more than a decade.

Putin said during the meeting that serious success in combating international terrorism has been achieved thanks to joint efforts of Russia and Syria. According to the Russian president, the achieved results “make it possible to stabilize social, economic and domestic political situations.”

Putin and Assad also discussed economic relations and the aftermath of devastating February 6 earthquakes during their meeting.

“Despite everything, our relations are developing, including in the economic sphere. Over the past year, a seven percent increase in trade was recorded,” Putin said at a joint news conference.

Putin said the earthquakes in southern Turkey, which were also felt in Syria, exacerbated the humanitarian situation and Russia is trying to provide support.

From his side, Assad voiced his support for the ongoing Russian special operation in Ukraine. The Syrian president said that Russia was fighting neo-Nazis and “old Nazis” there. He added that the West had taken in “old Nazis,” and was now giving them support.

“We are satisfied with the results of the work of the Syrian Russian joint committee, and my visit today paves the way to a new stage in relation to the bilateral ties,” Assad concluded.

Syrian Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas also held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu on the latest developments in Syria and the military-technical cooperation between the two countries in Moscow.

A statement by the Russian Ministry of Defense said that Abbas and Shoigu underlined during the talks the importance of continued close cooperation in order to preserve the security and stability of Syria.

Shoigu extended condolence to the families of the victims and those affected by the recent earthquake, asserting Russia’s support to Syria.

“In recent years, we have walked a long way, a huge distance in terms of liberation of Syrian territory from international terrorism. There is, of course, still a lot of work ahead, but most of this work has been done,” Shoigu said.

Abbas, for his part, hoped that the bilateral cooperation would continue to thrive in future, extending appreciation to the efforts of Russia in Syria.

In a related development, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, discussed with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, the foundations of bilateral cooperation and a number of issues of common concern.

“Lavrov and Mikdad discussed during their meeting a number of regional and international issues that received special attention from both sides, the most important of which are the changes taking place in the Middle East along with Syria’s restoration of its rights in the League of Arab States and other topics,” RIA Novosti quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement.

According to the statement, Lavrov affirmed his country’s support for the positive changes currently taking place in the Arab world.

“We will continue to support this positive trend and positive feelings in the Arab world during the next ministerial meeting between the League of Arab States and Russia, which we plan to organize in the coming months.” the minister said.

He added that Russia, with the support of Syria and other Arab countries, has been working for many years to strengthen the concept of collective security in the Gulf region and adjacent areas, pointing out that there are many conflicts in the region, which have extended to a number of countries in the Middle East and Africa.

Russia maintains a large military presence in Syria. The Russian military has played a key role in fighting terrorist groups in the country since 2015, and is currently working to rebuild capabilities of the Syrian Arab Army that was badly affected by more than a decade of war.

Assad’s visit to Russia gives another push to the already-excellent relations between the two countries. The visit is also expected to to help resolve several issues related to the Turkish-Syrian normalization process, which is being sponsored by Moscow.

For my part I also support all positive feelings in ME. As long as there are feelings there is hope, and with hope there are also feelings to support.

The Objective

The Syrian situation is similar to what’s happening in Pakistan. The forces of evil are trying to prevent the masses from having a decisive say over who rules them.
