On Sunday, Russian media published a series of comments by President Vladimir Putin that allows to get a closer look at the vision of the current international situation of the Russian Leadership and its reaction towards foreign attempts to meddle in Russia’s sovereign affairs.

Foreign powers are trying to weaponise frustration over falling living standards due to to the Covid-19 pandemic to stir up protests in support of jailed Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny, President Vladimir Putin has said.
With almost every major country in recession, people all over the world have been growing increasingly weary and frustrated with the toll the coronavirus pandemic has taken on living standards, and Russia is no exception, Putin said in an extensive interview with Russian media published on Sunday.
He added that it’s only normal to pin the blame on the authorities for all the woes the population might face in times of crisis such as the current one, but Moscow’s opponents “try to exploit” this sentiment to spite the Russian government.
“That’s what they did! Of course they would. That’s what they had counted on,” Putin said.
The Russian leader argued that “ambitious, power-hungry” people like Navalny are being cultivated and used by foreign powers to undermine and contain Russia. “We have had a lot of success, and it annoys them. That’s where the containment policy, including in the economy, comes from.”
Supporters of Navalny, whose group investigating corruption has sought funding from foreign states, held large rallies on January 23 and 31, demanding his release from prison. The gatherings, which were banned under Covid-19 prevention regulations, led to clashes with police. Thousands of people were detained, and some are now being prosecuted for breaking health protocols, and attending unauthorized protests.
Earlier this month, Navalny was found guilty of breaking the conditions of a suspended sentence, which dated back to a 2014 fraud conviction. He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years behind bars, minus 10 months already served. The activist argues that all of the charges are politically motivated.
In January, Navalny returned to Moscow from Germany, where he had spent several months recuperating from what his supporters and some international organizations say was a poisoning attack. The German government said that traces of the Novichok nerve agent were found in Navalny’s system. The activist himself accuses the Russian secret services of trying to assassinate him. The Kremlin, however, has denied any involvement in the case.

I understand how sanctions are supposed to work …. it’s just that they rarely work the way they are supposed to. Like most well laid plans they tend to fall apart upon contact with the enemy.

Nope. They (USA, GB, France) sanctioned and invaded Russia in 1917. The USSR was completely cut off from trade with the west until 1933 and even then it was extremely limited .. the only reason Roosevelt recognized the USSR was so failing US companies could make money building up Soviet industry during the depression.

The USSR was under some sort of sanction/trade restriction for it’s entire existence. At it’s highest point in 1988 Soviet trade with the west was only 4% of it’s trading economy.
