On January 3, 2020, US strikes on the Iraqi capital of Baghdad killed Major General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Qods Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).
For the first time in the history of Iran, a red flag was raised over the Holy Dome of Jamkaran Mosque in the holy city of Qom both symbolizing blood spilled unjustly and serving as a call to avenge a person who is killed. This was done in honor of General Qasem Soleimani. The raised flag demonstrates both the Iranian resolve to respond to the act of state terrorism committed by the United States and the significance of the personality of Soleimani for the state and nation.
The murder of Qassem Soleimani was another major mistake of the US military and political leadership. The terrorist act of the White House failed to achieve Washington’s goal to disrupt the command of IRGC units operating in Syria and Iraq.
On the contrary, the assassination of General Soleimani led to a surge of rage among the IRGC troops and strengthened their commitment to fight against the United States and its satellites.
During his life Soleimani was a living legend overseeing operations abroad, achieving key military diplomatic victories and spreading Tehran’s influence around the Middle East. After his death he has become an icon of the resistance both in Iran and in a large part of the Arab world.
On the eve of the second anniversary of the assassination, Press TV will release a series of documentaries about Martyred Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani. The films will be published from December 25 to January 3. The series takes a look at the life and struggle of Martyr Of Iranian Revolution.
