On September 12, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani arrived in the Afghan capital Kabul.

According to the Doha-based news channel Al Jazeera, Al-Thani met with the Taliban-appointed Prime Minister Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund. The two discussed the political situation in Afghanistan and Qatar’s efforts to support the war-torn country.

The Qatari foreign minister also met with former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and Chairman of the Afghan Reconciliation Committee Abdullah Abdullah in order to encourage all parties in Afghanistan to engage in national reconciliation.

Al-Thani is the most senior foreign official to visit Afghanistan since the withdrawal of US forces and the establishment of the country’s Interim Government by the Taliban.

Qatar, which hosted the leaders of the Taliban for many years, maintains a strong influence over the Afghan group. Doha ran the historical talks between the group and the US. The Arab country also played a key role in the evacuation of American citizens, Western nationals and Afghans who helped Western countries from Afghanistan.

Prior to his arrival in Kabul, Al-Thani made stops in Iran, Turkey, Pakistan and Russia to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan.

During the tour, the Qatari foreign minister called for the separation of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan from political development, stressed the impotence of addressing the concerns of Afghanistan’s neighbors and said that the Taliban should be encouraged to be more inclusive.

Qatar, which is well known for supporting Islamic movements, appears to be working hard to legitimize and promote the rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
