On October 21st, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shot down a cargo aircraft in Sudan.  The incident took place in the war-torn province of North Darfur. The group claimed that it shot down an Il-76 using MANPADS, and the aircraft reportedly belonged to Egypt.

However, the reports were supported with footage and judging by the photo of the documents found, the aircraft with the tail number EX-76011 belonged to Airline Transport Incorporation FZC from the UAE, which was engaged in delivering aid to Sudan. According to preliminary data, the crew included citizens of Russia and Kyrgyzstan.

“The Embassy is in contact with the Sudanese authorities and is taking all necessary actions to clarify the circumstances of this incident,” the statement by the Russian Embassy reads. The crew presumably included Russian citizens.

The IL-76 most likely came under friendly fire.

The United States has repeatedly stated that the UAE supplies weapons and UAVs to the RSF under the guise of humanitarian aid. Washington has been trying to convince Abu Dhabi to stop supplies for more than a year.

Since April 2023, an armed conflict has been ongoing between two sides: the regular army of Sudan under the command of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Reaction Force (RSF) under the command of General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The army’s Commander-in-Chief and the commander of the RSF ruled Sudan as the president and vice-president of the so-called Sovereign Council after a coup in October 2021. In mid-April, a heated conflict broke out between the two forces as a result of their disagreement over how the RSF should be integrated into the army and what authority should oversee the process during transition to civilian-led rule in the Arab country. The United States and Saudi Arabia intervened to launch talks and help broker a ceasefire. However, the two forces are yet to reach an agreement.
