Late on July 2, unidentified gunmen attacked a checkpoint of pro-government forces in the town of Talbiseh in the northern Homs countryside.

The gunmen, who were riding motorcycles, targeted the so-called al-Madrasah checkpoint with their assault rifles. The attack lasted only a few minutes. All the gunmen managed to flee the scene.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Syrian service member was killed and at least four others were injured in the attack. These claims have not yet been confirmed by official sources.

The Syrian Arab Army entered the town of Talbiseh and the remaining militants’ strongholds in northern Homs in 2018 following a reconciliation agreement brokered by Russia. The radicals were deported to Greater Idlib and Turkish-occupied areas in northern Aleppo. The remaining militants enlisted in pro-government forces or returned to civilian life.

The attack on al-Madrasah checkpoint may have been the result of a personal differences, since no terrorist group is known to be active in northern Homs.
