Late on August 25, prominent rebel commander Khaldoun Badawi al-Zoubi was assassinated in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.

Al-Zoubi was reportedly on his way back from a meeting in Daraa city with Brigadier General Louay al-Ali, head of the Military Intelligence Division branch in the governorate, when his motorcade was ambushed by a group of gunmen.

The unidentified gunmen targeted three vehicles which were carrying al-Zoubi and nine of his militants with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, before fleeing the scene.

Al-Zoubi was killed on the spot along with four of his militants, who were identified as Yazan al-Rashdan, Mahmoud Ramadan, Muhammad al-Salkhadi and Khalif al-Hamawi. The remaining five militants were all wounded, one of them was identified as field commander Muhammad Jadallah al-Zoubi.

Al-Zoubi was one of the Free Syrian Army most influence commanders in southern Syria. After the return of government forces to Daraa in 2018, he refused to join the reconciliation process or to hand over his weapons. He remained with his loyal militants in the town of Tafas in the western Daraa countryside.

The commander was reportedly in Daraa city to discuss the situation in Tafas with Brig. Gen. al-Ali. Syrian government forces besieged the town, where many wanted terrorists were taking shelter, early on in the month. The siege forced local commanders like al-Zoubi to cooperate.

Syrian opposition activities in Daraa claimed al-Zoubi was assassinated by the Syrian intelligence. The commander was apparently responsible for sheltering a number of wanted terrorists in Tafas, including top leaders of ISIS. The terrorist group’s general leader in southern Syria, Abu Salem al-Iraqi, and its top military commander in the region, Abu Omar Al-Jababi, were hiding in the town right under the eyes of al-Zoubi. Both of them were assassinated by the Syrian intelligence earlier this month.

The recent developments revealed that ISIS influence in Daraa is way stronger then what was thought before. The terrorist group managed to expand its presence in the governorate and nearby areas thanks to its close relations with local radical rebels.

No Iranians drones, no phase II, cities can’t be stormed, decision making centers can’t be struck, Russia can’t use nuclear weapons unless it is nuked first. Lets talk about anything but that.
