The recent Israeli strikes on southern Syria targeted a base of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and an Iranian weapons shipment, the New Arab reported on February 5.
According to the London-based outlet, the airstrikes, which took place late on February 3, hit a large base of the 165th Regiments, one of the SAA’s 1st Corps formations. The base is located near the district of al-Kiswah to the south of the capital, Damascus.
Israel claims that the 1st Corps is cooperating with Iranian-backed forces, namely Hezbollah, in southern Syria. Several bases of the corps were struck in the last few months.
The second target of the strikes was reportedly an Iranian weapons shipment, which arrived at Damascus International Airport on the same day. Two strikes hit the shipment, according to the New Arab.
The SAA General Command said ground-to-ground and air-to-ground missiles were used in the large attack. Some of the hostile missiles were intercepted.
The repeated Israeli strikes on Syria are a part of a political-military campaign meant to pressure Iran into withdrawing its forces from the war-torn country.
Since the beginning of the strikes in 2012, Syria has declined to respond militarily. This has only encouraged Israel to step up its attacks.
