On September 22, three soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) were killed as a result of an attack in Syria’s central region that was attributed to ISIS.
The soldiers lost their lives when their military truck was struck with a roadside bomb as it was passing on a road near the town of al-San in the eastern countryside of Hama. A fourth soldier was wounded in the attack. The bomb was reportedly planted by one of ISIS’s remaining cells in the area.
The three soldiers, identified as Zakaria Gomaa al-Saleh, Muhammad Alaa al-Jadi and Ismail Ammar Jaber, were serving in the ranks of the SAA’s elite 25th Special Mission Forces Division, commonly known as the Tiger Forces.

The 25th Special Mission Forces Division is mainly deployed around the northwestern region of Greater Idlib, which is occupied by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and several other terrorist groups. However, it also retains a large force in the central region to help counter ISIS cells there.
The deadly attack in al-San is worrying, as it confirms that ISIS’s remaining cells in the eastern Hama countryside are still active.
Over the last few months, the SAA and its allies conducted a series of operations against ISIS in the eastern Homs countryside, the southern Raqqa countryside and the western countryside of Deir Ezzor. The al-San attack will likely shift their attention to the eastern Hama countryside.
