On October 12, a rocket attack targeted the Khor Mor gas complex in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region which is run by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) energy company Dana Gas.
The complex was reportedly hit by a salvo of eight rockets. A spokesman for the Kurdish Region told the Reuters news agency that the attack didn’t result in any casualties or material losses. According to the spokesman, operations at the complex were not disturbed by the attack.
The complex, which produces 452 million standard cubic feet of gas daily, was attacked with rockets at least five times earlier this year.
In August, the Peshmerga foiled an attack on the gas complex. A unit of the Kurdish force uncovered and seized three Katyusha [107 mm] rockets which were set up in the Qadir Karam subdistrict, directed at the Khor Mor.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for any of the attacks that targeted the gas complex this year. Pro-Iranian factions were blamed by unofficial Iraq sources for some of the past attacks. At the time, tensions between Iran and the UAE was high. This is not the situation now, however.
The repeated rocket attacks on the complex are likely the result of a power struggle between key political and economic players in Iraq. Ownership over the highly-profitable gas complex is reportedly a matter of dispute between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.
