Early on July 27, a series of explosions rocked a large base of the US-led coalition near the town of al-Shaddadi in the southern countryside of Syria’s al-Hasakah.
Several news sources, including the Lebanese al-Mayadeen TV, reported that the explosion were the result of a rocket attack that targeted the coalition’s base. However, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said that the explosions were caused by joint live-fire drills between the coalition and its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Al-Shaddadi base, which is located at al-Jibsah oil fields, is one of the US-led coalition’s largest bases in Syria’s northeastern region. Several transportation and attack helicopters of the coalition are known to be deployed at the base.
The US-led coalition has not commented on the matter, yet. Usually, the coalition acknowledges any attack on its bases in Syria within 24 hours.
Earlier this year, a series of attacks with rockets and drones targeted several bases of the US-led coalition in northeastern Syria. Iranian-backed Syrian and Iraqi forces were unofficially blamed for most of these attacks. However, one attack was blamed on insider sabotage.
The US-led coalition have been working to expand its presence in northeastern Syria for a while now. The coalition is currently reinforcing its old bases and attempting to establish new ones. According to a recent report, the coalition is working to occupying the 17th Division base near the city center of Raqqa. The US withdrew its troops from Raqqa more than two years ago to facilitate a Turkish military operation against the SDF.
