On February 20 afternoon, a rocket attack targeted Balad Air Base in the southern Iraqi province of Saladin. The base is known to be hosting US troops.
A security source told RT that at least three rockets fell inside the air base, injuring two people. The nationalities of the casualties are yet to be revealed.
According to the Sabereen News, the rockets, which were of the 107 mm caliber, hit the former headquarters of the US Sally Porter company in Balad Air Base. US-led coalition troops are currently using the building.
The Telegram channel, which is close to pro-Iranian armed factions in Iraq, claimed that one of the wounded persons was a Sri Lankan contractor working for the coalition.
The attack on Balad Air Base was most likely carried out by one of the many pro-Iranian factions which were formed in Iraq over the last two years.
Earlier this week, a large-scale rocket attack targeted Erbil International Airport. A contractor was killed and nine other people, including a US service member, were wounded.
The recent wave of attacks on the US-led coalition in Iraq is meant as a response to the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of the Popular Mobilization Units, and Iran’s Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani. Both commanders were killed in a US drone strike more than a year ago.
