A salvo of rockets launched from Lebanon on May 3 hit a key air traffic control base of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Mount Meron in northern Israel.
The IDF said in a brief statement that at least ten rockets struck open areas in Mount Meron without causing any damage or casualties. Nevertheless, video footage posted to social media showed several rockets impacting the mount and white smoke rising from the base on top of it.
Hezbollah attacked Mount Meron, which is located some eight kilometers from the Lebanon border, several times in the last few months using rockets and guided missiles. However, the group is yet to claim responsibility for the last attack.
The group released two statements after the attack announcing that it had targeted a gathering of Israeli troops at the Saraswat area and struck surveillance equipment of the IDF at the Ruwaisat Al-Ilm site. It said that the attacks were carried out “to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance.”
In response to these attacks, the IDF announced that it had launched a series of strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.
Israeli fighter jets struck a building used by Hezbollah in the town of Markaba, the IDF said in a statement, addin that troops also shelled areas near the town of Aalma al-Shaab with artillery to “remove threats”. In addition, the IDF announced that two buildings used by Hezbollah in the town of Ayta al-Shaab were struck overnight.
Hezbollah didn’t announce any losses after the Israeli strikes and there were no reports of civilian casualties in Lebanese media.
Since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza last October, Hezbollah and its allies began launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Strip.
So far, the clashes have resulted in nine civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 11 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 272 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 70 civilians.
