Last night, a rocket landed in near the military section of Baghdad International Airport without causing any casualties.

The military section of the airport is mostly operated by the US-led coalition. According to the Iraqi military, the rocket was launched from a village west of the capital near the Abu Ghraib district.

This incident became the most recent in a long series of rocket attacks targeting US forces and facilities since the start of the year and the fourth attack since the US and Iraq started talks on the possible US troop withdrawwal from the country on June 11.

In January 2020, the U.S. assassinated Iranian Gen. Qassim Soleimani and Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces Deputy Chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a drone strike outside of Baghdad airport. This turned US forces into a permanent target for various attacks by pro-Iranian and even Iranian forces.
