Rocket Strike Hit Military Camp Hosting Coalition Troops Near Iraq’s Baghdad

Late on July 24, four “Katyusha” rockets struck Pasmaya military camp which is located 60 km south of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

In a statement, Security Media cell said that one of the rockets had hit an armor garage, while another had hit the barracks of the camp’s security unit. The two other rockets landed in empty areas. Despite causing some material losses, the rocket attack didn’t result in any casualties.

“Initial information indicates that the rockets were launched from the area of al-Dainiyah in the governorate of Diyala,” the statement reads.

Pasmaya military camp, which was primary used for training, is known to be hosting some troops of the U.S.-led coalition.

A day earlier, Maj. Gen. Kenneth P. Ekman, Deputy Commander of the coalition, announced that the camp would be handed over to Iraqi government forces on July 25. The general said the coalition was slowly reducing the number of its troops in Iraq.

U.S. forces are facing increasing challenges in Iraq. On July 23, a drone armed with a 2 kg bomb was found in an area neighboring Baghdad’s Green Zone, where the U.S. embassy is located. A rocket attack targeted the embassy on July 19.

Iranian-affiliated Shiite armed groups, like Kata’ib Hezbollah, are often blamed for these attacks. However, there is no evidence to back these accusations.
