Late on February 18, two key bases of the United States-led coalition in Syria’s northeastern region came under attack, according to several Syrian news sources.
Several rockets struck the Green Village base in al-Omar oil fields in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside as well as Mission Support Site Conoco, which is located within a gas plant a few kilometers to the north of the oil fields. Columns of smoke were reportedly seen rising from the two bases after the attacks, which happened just minutes apart. However, no casualties were reported.
The U.S. Central Command has not yet commented on the reported attacks. The command usually acknowledges such attacks within 24 hours.
Earlier this week, the coalition shot down an Iranian-manufactured drone over the Mission Support Site Conoco. After the incident, the commander of U.S. forces in Syria and Iraq warned of a response. An Iranian military advisor said that the small drone was testing American air defenses in northeastern Syria.
U.S.-led coalition bases in the northeastern region and a single garrison in the southeastern area of al-Tanf were attacked on several occasions over the past year. Armed factions affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were blamed for most of the attacks.
Some of the previous attacks were indeed carried out by IRGC-backed factions in response to Israeli strikes on Syria, or sabotage attacks within Iran.
More details on the alleged new attacks will likely surface in the upcoming few days. The U.S. may acknowledge the attacks and refrain from responding in order to avoid a new military confrontation with the IRGC and its allies.
