On November 24, the Russian military imposed full control on the road linking Pokrovsk with Rodynske to the north, effectively besieging all remaining Ukrainian troops in Myrnohrad, which is also known as Dimitrov.
The push came after the military, namely the Tsentr [Center] Group of Forces, completed mopping-up vast parts of Pokrovsk.
In its daily briefing, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that the 2nd Army “completely liberated” the Gornyak and Shakhtersky microdistricts inside the city. It added that operations were still ongoing in Rovnoye, located to the east right before Myrnohrad. Reports from other sources, however, suggest that the small settlement has been captured.
The ministry also said that the 51st Army is “pushing the enemy out” of the Vostochny and Zapadny microdistricts, and southern part of Myrnohrad.
More than 148 buildings were secured in the last 24 hours, according to the ministry, with other sources reporting that most areas to the south and southeast of the settlement had been captured.
“Over the past 24 hours in Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk) direction, up to 250 troops, two armored personnel carriers, one pickup truck, and two field artillery guns have been engaged,” the ministry said
At least 35 of the troops and one of the armored personnel carriers, an American-made M113, were lost when Kiev forces, specifically the 82nd and the 95th air assault brigades, as well as the 425th Assault Regiment, made eight attempts to recapture lost territories close to Grishino, according to the ministry.
It’s worth noting that Ukrainian media reported a day earlier that their forces had re-entered the center of Pokrovsk, and even secured most of the city. None of these claims turned out to be true.
Pokrovsk is clearly a few weeks, or even just a few days away from being fully captured by the Tsentr Group of Forces. The announcement will likely be made after the capture of Myrnohrad.
It is unknown how many Ukrainian troops are now besieged in Myrnohrad and nearby areas, but the number may be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousands. Many have already surrendered. The Tsentr Group of Forces is dropping leaflets to encourage the rest to do the same.
In a testimony shared by the Russian MoD, a Ukrainian prisoner of war who identified himself as Nikolai Babchuk, provided grim details about the situation of Kiev forces in Pokrovsk. The ministry noted that two of Babchuk’s comrades who refused to surrender were “neutralized”.
All in all, a catastrophic Ukrainian defeat is now taking shape in Pokrovsk and nearby areas. Kiev will likely deny and deflect for as long as it could in order not to harm its political stance and image in Western media. However, this will likely back fire, especially when it comes to the United States which appears to be growing impatient with Ukraine’s military failure.
