The Russian military has reportedly begun using balloons with radar reflectors attached to them to test Ukrainian air defenses.
On February 15, several Russian radar reflector balloons were detected over Kiev and nearby regions. Ukrainian air defenses engaged the balloons. At least one was shot down and photos of its wreckage were shared by Ukrainian sources. The balloon was carrying a very basic radar reflector made up from intersected square-shaped pieces of wood which were covered with what appears to be tin foil.
A day after the deployment of the radar reflector balloons, a large-scale Russian missile strike hit several high-value targets in different parts of Ukraine.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ignat said that the Russian military deployed the balloons as decoys to deplete and distract Ukrainian air defenses.
From its side, Kiev City Administration said that some of the balloons were carrying reconnaissance equipment which were used by the Russian military to locate and identify Ukrainian air defenses. This is yet to be confirmed.
The Russian military has been using a variety of aerial decoys, including aerial targets and old cruise missiles, to test Ukrainian air defenses since the beginning of its special operation in the country. However, this was the first documented use of radar reflector balloons.
In the last few months, Ukraine received several Western-made air-defense systems from its allies. However, its airspace is still completely open for Russian aircraft, drones and missiles.
Radar reflector balloons will allow the Russian military to deplete, distract and possibly locate Ukrainian air defenses at a minimum cost. The use of these balloons will likely continue on a mass scale.

Simple yet highly effective. Almost funny in a way.
That is serious trolling! Impressive and hilarious at the same time Excellent work Russia!
How exactly is this an excellent work? This is pointless – balloons are looking completely different on modern radar!
Russia is literally mocking the Ukro-Nazis and their NATO/LGBTQ backers at this point. Hahahahahahaha!!!
Russia is desperate: polystyrene and tin foil against lasers and satellites. Awesome. Whats next?
BTW – This is another example of russian army money scams – make 10 rubels worth ‘missile distraction device’ and charge taxpayers 1 million dollars… who would know?
must have watched the Valentines Day special a gecko? Mexico just made it legal for same sex couples.
With love from Mexico 😘👨❤️👨
When you can neutralize an enemy’s high cost weapon with a low cost countermeasure you have a tactical advantage.
Good stuff. Never seen a Russian rentry baloon system ala the U.S mars missions. Exotic radio transmission systems could do all sorts. Self destruct sequence because they are disposable. Wheels within wheels! Baloons within Balloons. Gas mixtures of nitrogen, oxygen and temperature gauges allow for all sorts of crazy shit. Renrtey MIRV logic for when theyget shot at for bigger models.

“Ukrainian air defenses consisting of a couple of guys with AK-47s engaged the balloons. ”
There, fixed it for ya.
You shouldn’t tell the enemy your plan
I see that the libtarded Discuss sensors are active again.
Sez a libtard with a faggy name.
I want to know how much of Ukraine’s Soviet era air defense network remains. How much longer can they keep shooting off S-300 missiles? Surely their stockpile, which is probably very old to begin with, is very low by now?
Ukraine has/had a plant to produce the S-300 missiles.
Ukrops have plants growing out of their ears. I think they’re called dill weeds. They grow very well when planted in Ukraine’s black earth. One day, Ukraine will become famous for its dill exports.
Ukrainians, like all Slavs, are very formidable opponents… Ukrainians had very large stocks of EVERYTHING because the NATO attack on the USSR was expected through Ukraine. The catch is that, unlike, for example, the Arabs, who call upon Allah and launch all the equipment they have into an attack and lose it in a few days, the average Slavic soldier will do everything in his power to save his equipment and outsmart the enemy. Look at the experiences from the NATO aggression on Yugoslavia, when NATO destroyed all stationary radars, but the Yugoslav Army preserved 90% of its air defense capabilities… The same thing happens in Ukraine, the Ukrainians gradually lose their equipment because the Russian attack is really strong, but they manage to preserve their equipment as much as possible and get the most out of it.
