Russia Calls For Immediate Ceasefire in Libya, Denounces Reports About 'Russian Mercenaries' As Based On False Data

On June 23, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for an immediate ceasefire in Libya, adding that Turkey and Egypt are also not interestsed in an forceful scenario of the conflict development.

Lavrov added that all external forces should create conditions for inclusive dialogue between the warring factions in Libya, something that Turkey and Egypt also agreed with, after Lavrov held talks by phone with the foreign ministers of those countries.

In a separate development, the head of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Pyotr Ilyichev commented on reports about the presence of ‘Russian mercenaries’ in Libya. According to him, most of these reports are based on false or misleading data.

“A lot of information, especially concerning the Russian citizens mentioned in the report, is simply unfounded. People who allegedly were fighting in Libya did not actually leave our country. So-called “wounded” are quite healthy. This is all available in the public space and is again verifiable,” Ilyichev said commeting on the recent report about the supposed involvement of ‘Russian mercenaries’ in the conflict

Official comments of the Russian side go contrary to what the US military claims. According to it, the presence of Russin private military contractors is a destabilizing factor in Libya. The US insists that these contractors fight on the side of the Libyan National Army. At the same time, Washington and Ankara in fact support the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord, which is infamous for cooperation with various al-Qaeda-linked formations.

It should be noted that despite remarks by the Russian Foreign Ministry, the presence of Russian prviate military contractors in Libya is an open secret. However, these forces mostly represent interests of various Russian business groups rather than the Russian state. The scale of this presence is also exaggerated by Western diplomats and media for propaganda purposes.

Wagner is a Russian mercenary group owned by one of the infamous Russian billionaire oligarchs. He is a very close friend to Mr. Putin. So I don’t buy Russian official claim that those mercenaries have nothing to do with Russian state. If so, it is even worst as it indicates that the oligarchs in Russia are out of control. Secondly Russia has no business in Libya because of the simple fact that Russia does not have any coastline in the Med sea. Russia tries to be a mediator between Egypt and Turkey, which I have found ridiculous and obscene too. There is no war-like situation between Turkey and Egypt. What is Russia trying to do? Put more gasoline into the fire? Is this a diplomatic provocation? Russia should mind its own business and should not interfere in disputes in between other countries, playing the game of a wannabe superpower, which it is clearly NOT.

jade villaceran

does the usa need coastline with the other country to mediate with the other countries or bomb them to the oblivion?

your right as of now they dont have war like scenario but they are the major players in the conflict of libya

what provocation are you reffering to? suggesting for cease fire and go to the table and talk?

i think you are reffering to the usa who are constantly interfering in other countries, militarily and economically, worse they bomb them into dust

Right. I consider US an imperial zionist villain but they still own the reserve currency of the world (albeit not much longer I assume) and have about 1300 military bases all over. US is still a superpower with its economy and influence. Russia is NOT. Russian economy is about the size of NY State and mostly based on oil and gas exports. Yes they are a military giant thanks to the know-how from Soviet Union and the nuclear warheads that they inherited. That’s about it. I was wondering why Russia wants to mediate in between? I guess Turkey and Egypt can come together at some other venues, if necessary or required. There are only some words flying around between Turkey and Egypt at the moment. That’s all. I also wonder why Russia is hyping the situation and trying to give the impression that the situation is escalating. Russia’s problem is far from being a nice guy to mediate. The real purpose seems to be a diplomatic maneuver to grab a seat around the table when it comes to negotiations. Russia wants to have some military presence and leverage in Libya, that is why they used Wagner mercenaries as proxies and that is why they want to mediate. Of course Russia as a state gave the green light for those mercenaries, even though they deny it. It is obvious as day light.

Rhodium 10

Yeah “Russia economy is the size of NY”…but Russian military power has the size enough to wipe off all United States and Europe! ..and when you have that power you can play your cards!…Russia support Egipt and Haftar because knows that Turkish wants to build Pseudocalifates inside Mediterranean countries and near there ..Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, West Libya, Idlib,Turkish-Cyprus with the approval of USA!..that means a terrorist hub which threat Egipt, Greece, Russia,Syria and Europe!…

M.A. Lamett

This is nonsense and simplistic thinking. Firstly, Turkey did not intervene because US wanted it. Actually US is against Turkey in Syria, Iraq and Libya. Moreover US devised a coup d’etat in 2016 to overthrow the legitimate government in Turkey. Currently, Turkey is playing Nato and US against Russia, because Russia wants to have a military presence in Libya. Russia knows that if Turkey gets Libya, Russian oil and gas exports to Turkey will lose its leverage. Worst if Russia can not have control over the gas in the med sea, the important south and north stream gas pipelines may not have a very bright future. Also having a military base in Libya may limit Turkish sphere of influence in the Med sea. This is why Russia is playing behind and supporting Egypt. Actually a conflict between Egypt and Turkey may serve Russian geopolitical interests. The view that Erdogan wants an Islamic caliphate or ISIS or whatever is just a cheap western/Greek/Jewish propaganda in order to stop Turkey’s rightful involvement in the Med sea in order to get its rightful share. It is just a nonsense to tarnish the image of Turkey. Erdogan is an islamist but the main reason of Turkey being there has nothing to do with Erdogan’s Islamic dreams whatever he may have. Turkey as a state has the right to be in Libya and protect its vital interests and financial future. Trying to paint it as a terrorist hub is a cheap and stupid ploy to scare the west, which only serves the imperialistic propaganda.

Dick Von Dast'Ard

Also don’e see France, Germany and Italy wanting Libyan oil in Turkish hands as extra leverage on top of flooding Europe with even greater numbers of MENA migrants.

Russia was a Great Power alongside Britain and France while the US were murdering Native Americans who had bows and arrows. You do realise that the US were sold Alaska by Russia.

You Yanks are an ignorant bunch when it comes to history, probably because you have none. You started off as colonists from Britain, and now you have been colonised by a state founded in 1948.

M.A. Lamett

What does this to do with the subject?

rightiswrong rightiswrong

It answers your stupid statement that Russia is not a superpower, that’s what.

You must be stupid to think that NY State could afford a space program, like the one that brought US passengers to space for the last while, never mind say the first people to break free of Earths gravitational pull.

NYC is a shithole, full of people living on the streets ffs.

Dick Von Dast'Ard

Think I read somewhere that Alaska provides 25% of all U.S. oil resources and 50% of all U.S. seafood and Russia gets treated so shoddily by those who also readily forget it was Russia not siding with Great Britain during the American War of Independence that allowed America to become somewhat independent of the British Empire and Crown, today. (so close to 4th July)

It is absolutely unbelievable the level of ignorance, ingratitude and selfishness in Washington DC.

rightiswrong rightiswrong

Russia didn’t want to be so close to the British Empire in Canada, knowing they were too far to protect it against a British invasion, or spoiling tactics. They offered it to the US to avoid Britain taking it over and moving closer to Eastern Russian lands. The US agreed to build a railway line connecting the US to Asia and Europe. Russia, as usual, lived up to its side of the deal and built the TranSiberian railway.

The US, as usual, broke its word.

Dick Von Dast'Ard

Not noticed many Russians having to pay 25% of their income in medical insurance.

The U.S. economy revolves around printing paper and pushing pieces of paper from one hand to another.

Sure that is established as wealth within America, but not really actual wealth.

The U.S. mansion is only worth 55% of the Russian mansion in net global worth.

M.A. Lamett

Could be true. Russia is an oligarchic capitalism and far from a just social state. Just remember the scandal of retirement pensions. In my view not much has changed in Russia since the zionist Oligarchy took over during Yeltsin years in the 90s. There is a growing discontent of Kremlin in Russia among ordinary citizens and there is a huge power struggle between the neo-liberals and other political groups, as we speak. Putin’s approval rating going down steadily.

rightiswrong rightiswrong

What business did the US have to attack Libya?

You Nazis get so butthurt when your shite troops can’t do the job.

Ever hear of Blackwater, the US mercs who shoot at people in traffic!

Dick Von Dast'Ard

When you have the resources (including military, diplomatic and scientific) of Russia… You are a superpower.

M.A. Lamett

Partly true. It matters who is in charge. The oligarchy in Russia owns many of the natural resources, either partly or fully. The banks are owned by neoliberal oligarchs. It seems that the Russian state is a semi-hostage to oligarchy. The oligarchy is powerful in Kremlin and certain establishments in Russia. Russia is an important regional power but far from being a super power. Natural resources alone doesn’t make you a super power. Otherwise we shall consider the Saudis a super power. You need independent military, economy, resources and a big population.

Dick Von Dast'Ard

OK, put it this way if Russia wasn’t a superpower, the U.S. (as a superpower) could impose it’s will upon Russia… It (U.S.)is incapable of doing so.

Unless you are saying Russia as a regional power is a stronger power than a weak superpower, i.e the U.S. ?

cechas vodobenikov

your stupidity is expected—Putin has reduced the riches of oligarchs my half–obviously a stupid amerikan that lives in a police state oligarchy where wealth an income disparities exceed all nations—excepting a few African-2 Latin amerikan nations “amerikans are ignorant and unteachable”. George Santayan

cechas vodobenikov

it is the amerikan fascist that should remain in your cultural desert—u r the barbarians that destroyed Libya—a far more civilized people than amerikans where universal health care, 5 week vacations, and state paid higher education existed—non of which u idiots possess. “amerikan requires a stupefied population”. Christopher Lasch

Dick Von Dast'Ard

My understanding is the Russian super*mercs are contractually employed by the UAE.

Tommy Jensen

I also urge the parties to refrain from any violence and to talk with each other, if you at all have a brain which is not the brain of an ape. Put your hands on the other guy’s legs, look him deep in the eye and talk it over with each other.

Lazy Gamer

Syria is now allied with Egypt and LNA. Seems, we now have a recipe for a massive clusterfuck. Obama should not have bombed Libya.
