Russia Deployed Su-35S Fighter Jet At Qamishli Airport In Northeastern Syria

The Russian Aerospace Forces had deployed at least one Su-35S fighter jet in al-Qamishli Airport in northeastern Syria, North Press Agency journalist Hoşeng Hesen revealed on October 28.

Hesen shared a photo showing the Russian fighter jet parked inside the airport, which is located right along the border with Turkey.

The fighter jet appeared to be equipped for air combat with four R-77 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles, two R-73 short-range air-to-air missiles and the L175M Khibiny-M ECM [electronic countermeasures] system.

While al-Qamishli Airport is held by Syrian government forces, most of the nearby city is controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Following the 2019 Turkish invasion of northeastern Syria, Russia deployed several helicopters, radars and at least one air-defense system in the airport. Russian forces were dispatched to the region back then to monitor a ceasefire between Turkish forces and the SDF.

The airport is considered fairly safe. The Turkish military and its Syrian proxies are present in the town of Ras al-Ain and its surroundings, some 100 kilometers to the west of al-Qamishli. US forces also operate away from the airport.

Over the past two years, several news sources claimed that Russia is planning to establish a base in al-Qamishli Airport similar to that in Hmeimim on the Syrian coast.

The deployment of the Su-35S fighter jet in al-Qamishli may be a Russian message to Turkey, which is reportedly preparing to launch a new operation against the SDF. Kobane, which is located in northeastern Syria, is allegedly one of the main targets of the upcoming operation.

Most excellent Comrades. Deterrence is gold. Still the most beautiful jet ever created.

Russia only needs one plane to make a statement. The balls they have :-)

Lazy Gamer

Remember Saraqib? in 2019, Russia posted Russian military in the city but Erdogan went ahead and pounded the city with artillery. Erdogan likes to play it crazy. lol Still, that air to air fighter coupled with the bombing of the HQ of the terrorists, is the direct response to the Ukrainian drone. IIRC, Turkey still owes Russia a downed fighter jet. Each side has now made their threats, we wait and see if someone is crazy to start the whole thing. lol

Cromwell

Yes but now the SAA liberated Saraqib after the Russians backed them up and put the Turks in their place.

If Ukrainians ally with Turkey they will pay hard.

TopGum

Turkey has no business to occupy areas in Syria. Their ass is on thin ice already. “Crazy” is the last thing they need right now.

Cromwell

These jets are for air to air combat,so looks like a signal they expect to challenge any Turkish fighter jets or bombers and maybe the US violating Syrian airspace, not before time.

Chris Gr

Unfortunately, many Turkish Kurds and Iraqi Kurds support the Turks in this. They left their Syrian counterparts.

An amazing aircraft. Looking forward to seeing the MiG-35 enter serial production. Although designed for a different role it is still an amazing design. MAKS airshow videos are impressive.

Corrupt shithole of Ukropisstan

The Mig-35 production will be cranked up once India orders a larger batch of it. And it will happen because they have experience with the base Mig-29, the modernized Mig-29M and the naval Mig-29K. Its a no brainer they will order it to supplement their fleet with a jet that has AESA, longer range, more sophisticated avionics and 3D thrust vectoring. India meeds every advanced jet they can get their hands on. And the Mig-35 outperforms the newest F-18 Superhornet variant for half the price.

Good info. More important is that the Russians retain a significant supply of this aircraft, for national security.
