The Russian military has deployed air defense systems in Syria’s Deir Ezzor in what appears to be a response to recent US strikes on Iranian-backed forces in the governorate.
On August 27, a video showing at least one Pantsir-S short-range air-defense system on a road near the town of Hatlah surfaced online.
Hatlah is located within a small pocket on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River that is held by the Syrian Arab Army and Iranian-backed forces. The pocket is surrounded by bases of the US-led coalition and its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The Pantsir-S1 was designed to provide point air defense of military, industrial and administrative installations against aircraft, helicopters, precision munitions, cruise missiles and drones.

A confrontation between Iranian-backed forces and the US broke out in Syria on August 15, when two coalition bases in the country’s northeastern and southeastern regions came under attack. The US responded with a series of strikes that targeted positions of Iranian-backed forces in Deir Ezzor between August 23 and 25. Iranian-backed forces hit back by attacking three bases of the coalition and the SDF in Deir Ezzor. Both sides sustained casualties as a result of the fire exchange.
The deployment of air defenses in Deir Ezzor indicates that the Russian military is planning to expand its presence in the governorate, possibly to deter the US-led coalition and the SDF.
Russia was apparently triggered by the US-led coalition’s recent strikes on Iranian-backed forces. The newly-deployed air defenses will greatly limit the movements of coalition warplanes, especially combat drones, attack helicopters and gunships, over Deir Ezzor.
They haven’t deployed the S300 “game-changer” not even once, the fake news of it being switched on notwithstanding, so this deployment is once again all show no action. How many times has Israel bombed Syria since 2015?

There’s nothing Syria can do though and even Russia knows this, Israel keeps attack Syria because they’re trying to goad Assad into retaliation which gives Israel a free pass to get more involved in Syria under the guise of “They attacked us, we gotta get involved now”, it’s frustrating but true, Syria already has its hands full anyway so opening up yet another front and giving Israel what they want by attacking them is not a good idea. S-300’s were shipped too Syria years ago and they never shot at Israeli planes despite it being said that they could target the planes the moment they took off, They always said they Syrians were still being trained. The Pantsir -S1 COMPLIMENTS the S300/S400 both systems can be combined electronically –in this situation it shoots down aircraft- helicopters-cruise missiles as it can operate at water level – missile launching is 1.5 seconds .
It can operate in automatic or passive mode and has radar and optical targetting –check out the Russian base in Syria –BOTH systems work together there and the USA and Israel know that .
For this type of operation the S300 is not needed .
At least 10 Pantsir-S1 confirmed visually via satellite photos at Hmeimim airbase. They work in a battery with Podlet-K1, Kasta-2E2, and P-19 radars synced together with S-400 battery deployed there. Not to mention at least 6 Tor-M2 that are also deployed at Hmeimim. Meanwhile Tartus only has 4 Pantsir deployed, no long range AD.

Deir Ezzor needs longer range Russian army AD like BUK-M1-2 or even S-300PM2. Americans fly over western euphrates all the time and even bombed Deir Ezzor military airport recently where Russian troops are stationed. ZERO air defense there. Only old Syrian ones from 1960s. Problem is its far away from Hemimim so Russian jets take long time to fly there to protect troops and counter US jets.
Russia needs to deploy more Pantsir/BUK in Deir Ezzor. They can easily shoot down the AH-64 Apaches and AC-130s that regularly overfly mayadin and deir ezzor if they do. Even MANPAD igla stinger or verba can shoot them down.
Unfortunately the Pantsir-S1 fire control radar performs poorly against stealth targets at medium ranges and is very susceptible to active jamming. This can be fixed by upgrading to full active phased array antennas. This is why they could not get a radar lock on small UKROP quad copter drones over Crimea and had to use their cannons instead. Too small radar targets not clear enough radar track. AESA antenna would solve this 100%. China is number #1 microelectronics producer and main ally of Russia, they can help develop AESA if needed. If all Russian AD fcr radars were converted to AESA, problems would be solved and they would become even more effective. Lessons of Ukraine war. Expensive but worth it! China is converting all air defense/aircraft radar to AESA slowly. Still despite this Pantsir shot down MQ-9 in Libya which has even smaller radar signature than Bayraktar TB2. Imagine how much more effective and deadly S-300/400 BUK Pantsir Tor would be if all their radars were converted to 100% AESA design? Ranges would increase dramatically, anti-stealth range increase dramatically, they would be no match whatsoever for Americunts to NATO fags.

Deploying air defence system is not sufficient to deter such raids in thr future. A NO FLY ZONE across Syrian airspace for all unfriendly military aircrafts should be strictly imposed by joint forces of Syria, Iran, and Russia..
