On the night of January 11, according to Ukrainian monitoring, Russian forces launched 154 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), 125 of which were reportedly intercepted. Strikes on energy facilities, railway infrastructure, and airfields were reported. Over Russian territory, air defense systems downed 33 drones. A massive attack on Voronezh damaged civilian infrastructure and caused civilian casualties.

Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) recorded the first combat use of the “Geran-5” (Geranium-5) kamikaze drone by Russia during a recent massive raid. This UAV is built according to a classic aerodynamic design with a fuselage length of about 6 meters and a wingspan of up to 5.5 meters. It carries a 90 kg warhead and can strike targets at a distance of up to 1000 km, making it suitable for attacks on remote objects.

According to Ukrainian experts, the “Geran-5” is based on the Iranian Karrar prototype and is unified with other models of the “Geran” family. The drone is equipped with a 12-channel “Kometa” navigation system, a tracker based on Raspberry Pi and a 3G/4G modem, as well as a Telefly jet engine with increased thrust. These characteristics allow it to maneuver effectively and cover significant distances, as confirmed by debris found in the Odesa region after recent attacks.

The latest use of the “Geran-5” was noted by the Ukrainian side on January 10 in the Zgurivka area of the Kyiv region. It is reported that developers are studying options for launching the drone from aerial carriers, such as Su-25 attack aircraft, to extend its range and reduce costs, and the integration of R-73 “air-to-air” missiles, which could turn it into a means of countering Ukrainian aircraft. In the context of Su-25s, which are limited in guided munitions and forced to attack from a dive, such a combination adds new tactical capabilities, increasing the effectiveness of attack aircraft without excessive risk to pilots.

Strikes on Ukraine on January 11

Russian forces struck eight regions of Ukraine. In the Kharkiv region, a gas-fired power station in Eskhar and a railway bridge in Lozova were damaged. In the Zhytomyr region, “Geran” drones were observed loitering along railway tracks in the Korosten area, causing explosions; similar activity was recorded in the Rivne region near a bridge in Rakytne. In the Kyiv region, the main target was the airfield in Vasylkiv. In the Odesa region, a pontoon crossing was destroyed in Maiaky.

In Kramatorsk, a missile strike hit an underground bunker near the airport, destroying the structure with up to 40 servicemen, including mercenaries and officers; the airport itself switched to emergency power, and nearby villages — Abazivka, Veselyi, Krasnohirka, and Partysanskyi — were left without electricity.

The Zaporizhzhia region experienced a complete blackout due to infrastructure damage, with voltage fluctuations from 50 to 270 V; by morning, power was restored to 382 thousand households.

The energy situation in Ukraine has reached a peak of complexity this winter. In Kyiv, a blackout lasted more than 40 hours, leaving hundreds of buildings without light and heat at temperatures down to minus 16°C; residents complain of indoor temperatures dropping to 10–12°C and are blocking roads. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the power system failed, outage schedules were canceled, but critical infrastructure has been restored. Companies DTEK and Yasno link the problems to a combination of strikes and frost; Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted that a thousand buildings are without heating, and Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko postponed the timelines for normalizing utility services.

Strikes on Russia

According to information from Russian sources, in the Voronezh region, Ukrainian drones launched from the Chernihiv region, including “Chaklun-V” models with a 20-kg warhead and 6 mm damaging pellets, attacked an area in the southwest of the city of Voronezh. The likely target was the “Baltimore” military airfield, but civilian objects were hit: three civilians were wounded, with a young woman later dying in intensive care. Ten apartment buildings, as many private houses, a gymnasium, and administrative buildings were damaged; a fire broke out in one house. Drone debris is being found throughout Voronezh, highlighting the scale of the attack on a densely populated area.

Against this backdrop, some analysts view Russia’s recent use of the “Oreshnik” hypersonic missile against targets near Lviv as a symbolic and demonstrative step.

“Such a strike in close proximity to the borders of the EU and NATO is a serious threat to security on the European continent and a test for the transatlantic community. We demand a decisive response to Russia’s reckless actions,” stated Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

This strike occurred in close proximity to the border with Poland, where the key logistics hub in Rzeszów for Western military supplies is located. The day before, Polish authorities announced plans to relocate part of Ukrainian missile and drone production to its territory, as well as a new package of military aid.

From a technical standpoint, the warheads of the “Oreshnik,” which separate in dense layers of the atmosphere, remain invulnerable to modern air defense systems like Patriot, THAAD, or Arrow-3. A strike near the Polish border — mere tens of seconds from the NATO hub in Rzeszów and the Mesko plant — appears as a demonstration of Russian capabilities in response to the increase in NATO support for Ukraine.
