On December 1st, Russia deployed its newly-upgraded S-300V4 missile defense system to the Kuril Islands, which are disputed by Japan.
Tokyo refers to the islands as the “Northern Territories.”
Russia said it had deployed the missile defense system for combat duty on the islands. The Russian Defense Ministry’s Zvezda TV station said the mobile air defense system, designed to counter ballistic and aerial attacks, was on Iturup — known in Japan as Etorofu — one of four islands that are under Russian control and Japan claims ever since World War II.
“Short-range anti-aircraft missile systems are already on duty on the island of Iturup in Sakhalin Region. Now the air defense ‘heavy artillery’ has arrived. The so-called large air defense system: the S-300V4,” Zvezda said.

It is noted that the readiness for this was personally checked by the commander of the district troops, Colonel-General Gennady Zhidko.
“He highly appreciated the coherence of the work of the crews and the duty forces during the training to practice actions upon receipt of a signal about the violation of the air borders of the Russian Federation in the Kuril Islands,” the message said.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that the S-300V4 air defense system is a modern highly mobile air defense system. It is designed to cover important objects from the attacks of ballistic and aerodynamic air attack weapons.

The satellite images were shared by a Weibo user with a handle “Mr. Chen”.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry lodged a complaint at the deployment.
“We are constantly gathering information about the Russian military’s actions in the Northern Territories (Japan’s term to refer to Russia’s Southern Kuril Islands – TASS). On December 1, the Japanese Embassy in Russia lodged a protest with the Russian Foreign Ministry, noting that such actions can reinforce Russian military capabilities and are incompatible with our country’s position on these islands,” the ministry said.

Russia and Japan have been in talks to sign a peace treaty since the mid-20th century. The main stumbling block to achieving this is the ownership issue over the Southern Kuril Islands, called the Northern Territories in Japan.
After the end of World War II, the Kuril Islands were incorporated into the Soviet Union. However, the ownership of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan Islands and the Habomai Islands has been challenged by Japan. The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly said that Russia’s sovereignty over these islands, which is committed to paper in international documents, cannot be called in question.
In this most recent situation with the S-300V4, the US decided to pitch in with its idea.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry has slammed the US Department of State’s demand for Russians living in the Kuril Islands to name Japan as their place of birth, stressing that Washington encourages revanchism and revisionist mood.
“Do we need another evidence that the United States is a revisionist power? Under the 1945 decision, the Kuril Islands were handed over to the Soviet Union. Today, the Department of State is calling in question the outcome of World War II and is encouraging revanchism (political manifestation of the will to reverse territorial losses incurred by a country),” the ministry stated on its official Telegram channel. “Know your borders and ‘red lines,” it stressed.
Earlier, Japan’s Hokkaido Simbun reported citing the rules for the green card lottery published on the State Department’s website that Russians born in the Kuril Islands should say their place of birth is Japan, while the natives of Sakhalin should write that they were hail from Russia.

There are reports that S300 V4 is more capable than the S400. And the S400 Turkey purchased are the export version. Erdogan’s dream to coproduce S500 with Russia is a vain dream, considering his behavior of undermining Russian interests.
I doubt V4 is more capable, it would be a S-350, which can counter F-35 threat of the Japs
S350 is a medium range system that will replace the older S300, its missiles are lighter and deadlier. S350 forms an echelon of layered defense in a Integrated air defense system. The 40N6 long range missile which is intended for AWACS and tankers would very likely take out F35 since the missile’ homing device has a bird eyes view, where stealth is meaningless.

Yes, “more capable” than S-400 against missiles. S300 V4 is specialized for shooting missiles (ballistic, cruise missiles) while S-400 is classical anti-aircraft system.. Both systems have cross-over capability (to do what other does in limited way) S-400 has capability to shoot down missiles – but with much smaller range and weaker performance than S-300V4 and opposite….
S-500 is successor of S-300 V4 (not of S-400) S-400, S-350 and S-500 are the medium to very long range defense system of near future…All other systems will be phased out gradually
The S300 V4 will deploy the 40N6 missile which will extend its engagement range, its speed of Mach 14 has limited capabilities for targets flying 6kms/s; it fas the ability to ascend to high altitudes and then arc downwards searching a target. The S500 deploys missiles that can develop speeds of 6kms/s, its targets are low orbiting satellites, any hypersonic weapons or ballistic missiles before they jettison the MIRVs.
As far as I know 40N6 missile is in service already. 40N6 missile = 400 km range hyper-sonic. S-400 also uses hyper-sonic missiles. The main difference between S-300 V4, S-400 on one hand and new S-500 is that S-500 is built for intercepting hyper-sonic missiles up to Mach 8. Unlike the other two, S-500 has radar specialized for capturing “locking on” hyper-sonic missiles.
The S500 platform has missiles that travel at as fast as ballistic missiles, far better than THAAD or SM3, and intercept ballistic missiles in space.

Syria and Armenia does not need multiple radars frequencies to fuse them and identify the targets, this concept is used for stealth identification and target lock. Syrians turn off their radars when attacked, afraid of anti radiation missiles, and rely on infra red sensors to identify incoming missiles. Not a good procedure, since reaction time is short. Pantsir and Tor should be able to intercept anti radiation missiles, however, Syrian training and tactics are not bold enough. Then there is the Russian reluctance to let all hell to break loose on Israeli F-16’s……….which makes things not optimal.

Not true. Syrian air defense personnel are Russian trained. It’s also well known IAF doesn’t enter Syrian airspace to launch it’s tiny little pinprick attacks. S-200 is more than capable of dealing with F-16, and F-35 as was demonstrated. Syrian air defense will not fire on IAF aircraft launching missiles from Lebanese airspace, as IAF attacks over the villages lining both sides of the border. As such the debris from a downed IAF fighter would fall on the villages. Syrians, Iranian’s, Hezbollah, Iraq, and Russia do not attack civilian infrastructure, or populations. S-300 can’t be armed with nuclear tipped TLAMs …. Aegis with MK-42 launch boxes installed in Poland and Romania can. If Russia deploys Iskanders then you have an equivalent argument.
Aegis ashore cuts the time for the Russians to react to a nuclear attack on Moscow to 15 minutes. If Russian satellites detect a launch from Aegis ashore they have 15 minutes to decide if they are under attack and respond …. in the 1980’s it was 30 minutes.

We can identify threats, we can guess at probable responses … but outside of a very small circle of Russians no one know how the Russians will react to missiles fired in their direction.
