On February 23, two more advanced Su-57 stealth fighter jets were deployed by the Russian Aerospace Forces at their Hmeimim airbase, near the Syrian coastal city of Jableh, according to photos published by Syrian pro-government activists.
The photos showed the two stealth fighter jets approaching Hmeimim. The Su-57 warplanes were escorted by a Su-30SM multirole fighter jet.

The activists also revealed that the Russian Aerospace Forces had deployed a second A-50U airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) plane at the Hmeimim airbase. The second A-50U has the serial number (41 Red), according to the released photos.

The Russian Aerospace Forces deployed two Su-57 stealth fighter jets, four Su-35 warplanes, four Su-25 warplanes and an A-50U AEW&C plane at the Hmeimim airbase on February 21.
Experts believe that the advanced Su-57 stealth fighter jets were deployed in Syria in order to conduct several tests in a real battlefield environment. These tests may include testing of advance guided air to ground weapons. Russia has previously tested several modern weapon systems, including the state of the art Iskander missile system, in Syria.
So far, the Ministry of Defense of Russia has not commented on the deployment of the Su-57 stealth fighters in Syria. Nonetheless, the U.S. Department of Defense stated on February 23 that the deployment of these advances jets don’t pose any threats to the US-led coalition in Syria.

The really stunning breakthrough with the SU-57, is its agility. American stealth aircraft have very poor maneuverability. If you can get a lock on an F22, B2, F35, you have a kill, they cannot out maneuver a missile like most fighter aircraft, they are sitting ducks. Even the old F16 can dodge a missile, but not an F22, or F35.

Su 57 are likely going to stay in radar shadow of Su-27/30/35s in order not to enable US to “profile it”. On the other hand i can’t see USAF resisting the opportunity to prove they have the better plane and that’s were A-200 and Tu-214 sensors come into play..You’ll basically have US and Russia trying to feel the other plane up while not letting the other side do it to them. If Russia is only showcasing the Su57 like they did with the M29K, I.e., the plane drops a few bombs and fires a few rockets before going home, then this is a wasted effort by RF. A ‘steath’ fighter is the opposite of the modern SAMs the Russians have been showcasing in Syria the last 2 + years. That is to say, stealth aircraft are inherently OFFENSIVE weapons, if they’re not defeating an opponent’s radar, then their deployment to the battlefield is a complete waste. Since the Su 57 deployment however, I’ve been thinking this is less and less likely. Think about it, doesn’t this move almost force the Americans to bring the F35 out to play? And wouldn’t that force the US to expose the F35 to the Russia’s combat radar?
The RF is being more strategic here than manyrealize. Has anyone noticed the frustration and borderline anger some western Writers have displayed by this move? I think they have an inkling if Putin’s real intentions with this, and it’s not some gimmick.

You are fairly accurate in your assessment. The SU57 is an attack aircraft and the US bases are illegal. The message to the US coalition is that the game has stepped up a notch or two so when they are told to leave the Russians will have their military well organized, prepared and to strike. Putin has not forgotten the US attack and killing of Russian soldiers and as Putin once stated that the Russians never forget or forgive an act of aggression against them. SU57 and the SU35,34,30 need to operate as one unit each with there own functions, combined they are formidable and supported by Kalibr missiles the Russians have Syria covered and Turkey/Israel are on notice also. Next move is from the US, they either back off or start a major conflict but this time Russia is prepared even if NATO decides to attack the Russians have the defences/offences already well placed.

Why risk an SU-57when u could use a Mig-31 (fastest aircraft in the world) to shoot a weapon from a long range! Or even better, use a Kaliber Cruise missile! Mig31 is an interceptor not a fighter, totally different roles. SU57 is in Syria to engage in combat and to make any adjustments, improvements and most important; pilot training in a conflict zone. Unless you have flown a SU you wouldn’t know how they operate, limitations, shortcomings and as for the pilot the stress not just physical but to be able to adjust to new systems and how/when to engage them.
You are onto something. The are expecting the US to respond and escalate their stealth presence. If that happens, it would give the A50 mainstay much more data to analyze.
But they let the US get a close look at the SU57. Seems like a price the Russians are willing to pay. Maybe these are their deliberately less stealthy prototypes.
I think that’s a distinct possibility. No one needs to show and potentially lose their most advanced weapons without a very good reason. Syria does not yet constitute a critical warfare arena hence this could just be a move to keep the US and Israel guessing and somewhat destabilised.
Just imagine Israel trying to pull off another stunt, not coming over Lebanon but some other direction, maybe Jordan, or Via Saudi and then Iraq. Maybe they are planning to come with some transponder tricks and radar spoofing technology and slip away before anyone notices. I think the SU 57 is there to beef up any local ground based air defences, and to give chase to those who are too cocky. I would not want one of those on my tail!

I think that u have over analysed this! Those who do their research already know that the SU-57 (of which there are still only 11 made) has just been fitted and flown its 2 stage engines on December 5th. A small and close war to the Russian main land where the Russians also have their own airbase is a perfect opportunity to test this aircraft (which has only just recently gone from development stage to active stage) and its new engines with ordnance. Therefore they can test its targeting, sensors, accuracy, radar etc. I also believe they will approach Turkish jets (which are F-15’s and F-16’s) purely to see what reactions the Turkish airforce gives them! This enables the Russians to analyse the Turks response and get some real world feed back. I guarantee u that this aircraft will drop a few bombs and thats it! Id say its most dangerous task will be to fly into or near Turkish airspace! Perhaps even fly right up to the Afrin pocket and give the Turkish airforce a sudden surprise visit! There are almost no threats to the Russian airforce in syria! Drones dropping bombs are now less likely, turkey shooting down a Russian plane is not likely, America wouldnt dare start WW3. its perfect time to test this plane! Just think about it, most of the Russian aircraft never had real world experience before and some of them were developed in the 1960’s. TU-160! TU-95. Why let an opportunity go to waste! Of course this is just for testing! Thats all! Much cheaper to use SU-24’s or SU-27’s than risk an aircraft like this! This is common sense I believe!

If what I believe is indeed happening, it would make sense for Russia to deploy a batch of 4-6 MiG-31s and a couple of additional S-400 eastward in and around Tiyas airbase. Establishing a clear and undisputed air superiority seems the only way to bring this war to an end.

Even though I am sure President Putin makes the final decision, these things will only be done because of a detailed, complicated and extensive analysis by military experts. All military matters are very technical and require incredible detailed knowledge. So I doubt anything is purely for show. For my part it looks clear to me that these planes are not needed simply to fight ISIS. May be we will never know all the reasons.
