A Russian nuclear icebreaker “Arktika” (Project 22220) was floated out in the city of St. Petersburg on June 16. When the vessel is finished, it will become the world’s largest in its class. The icebreaker will be finished by December 2017.
The Project 22220 series is scheduled to replace nuclear ships of the previous generation. New ships will be bigger and more powerful then previous. They will also be capable to sale open seas and operate in shallow waters.
Arktika’s length is 173.3 meters, maximum speed is 22 knots and maximum draft is 33,540 tons. The ship will have endurance of six full months having 75 crewmembers onboard. It also carries a helicopter for ice reconnaissance and communication purposes
