The Russian military has started forming a permanent force at the Tartus naval facility and the Hmeymim airbase in Syria, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced on December 26.
“Last week, the supreme commander-in-chief approved the structure and the personnel strength of the Tartus and Hmeymim bases. We have started forming a permanent grouping there,” the minister said, according to the Russian state-run news agency TASS.
The formation of the permanent force came after Russian President Putin ordered the forces pullout from the country on December 11. Shoigu reported to Putin on December 22 that his order had been fulfilled.
According to pro-government sources, Russia is now transforming its military presence in Syria in order to participate in the final stage of counter-terrorism operation in the country.
Good! … The Russians should maintain a reasonably strong presence to cover anything the Yanks dream up to destabilise the post ISIS peace, which one can count on them doing. The US will never accept victory by Syria and a return to peace and prosperity, that does not fit in with their plans at all …. now let’s watch what they do next, but one can count on trouble and lots of it!
The problem is that the US is also planning to stay in SDF controlled areas. It’s not about fighting ISIS any more, ISIS was the excuse to have a presence in the first place, just like they’ve done in the past in a couple countries.

The US is setting up a base from which to project action and attempt to disrupt troop and supply movements along the Iraq – Syria highway as well as control oil / gas resources in the SDF controlled area.

US presence in Syria should only be dealt with militarily after the rest of Syria has been freed, so that Syria may direct all its military resources to dealing with the US invaders and their allies.

I agree with you that at some stage the US, who are in Syria illegally under International Law, will have to be encouraged to leave; ideally of their own volition. However, the US have no intention of leaving so they will have to be “encouraged”. No doubt Russia, Iran and Syria have been thinking about this little problem for some time. It will now be interesting to see how this is handled both diplomatically and militarily. BUT leave they must and soon.
