Russia Ushkuynik Research and Production Center is currently testing a drone boat controlled via a fiber-optic cable, Russian Telegram news channels revealed on September 9.
Alexey Chadayev, the general director of the center, reportedly said that the concept was being tested in cooperation with the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet.
The fiber-optic cable used to control the drone boat was especially designed to remain submerged under water. It sinks immediately to the seabed during operations and remains shielded from damage thanks to its weighted, reinforced design.
It’s worth noting here that fiber-optic cables are already used in military maritime applications, for example to guide modern torpedoes. Thus, the technology is mature.
The new drone boat is capable of fulfilling many tasks. It can be armed with a warhead and deployed on one-way attack, or suicide, missions. It can be also used to intercept other drone boats, or to deploy radio-controlled aerial drones that can be used for reconnaissance and attack.
Chadayev emphasized that the system was tailored specifically to the operational environment of the Black Sea, taking into account the unique challenges of naval warfare in the region.
Last month, Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, a Ukrainian specialist in communications, electronic warfare, and radar systems, warned that Russia was accelerating the development of drone boats and could soon attack Ukraine with hundreds of such vessels.
The warning came after Russia’s leading Rubikon advanced unmanned technology center revealed in a video released on the anniversary of its founding that it had been working on developing such boats.
Soon after in the same month, the Russian military struck the reconnaissance ship Simferopol, one of the largest and newest ships in service with the Ukrainian Navy, in the River Danube with a drone boat, marking the first such successful attack for the country.

torpedoes can be used up to 800 meters, this is antisubmarine weapon too. modern submarines have anti-ship and cruise missiles in their arsenal. project 885 has 32 missiles in vertical launchers and up to 24 torpedoes/mines, which could be replaced with missiles. “poseidon” is also kind of torpedo, but with larger autonomy level.

what if venezuela called and offered to test them in combat situations against the us and british fleets (yes the british are off the coast of venezuela too, look it up) currently threatening an attack on them.
those iranian sea drones and anti ship missiles may need fine tuning in combat too.
the north korean air defence systems could also be combat trialed.
it would only be fair…..
having to use fiber optic on sea drones means that the russians are bluffing about their much publicized doomsday poseidon toy submersible just like they bluff about their atomic powered cruise missile.
sure. if a person has told you, that he has a big excavator and then you see him buying a shovel, you know, that he was lying about the excavator… you’re very smart.
why in gods name you would produce this easy to spot, rediculesly slow, easy to neutralize item if you can produce u-boats with torpedos that are even fast than a fucking drone in the air?? i mean i bet a boat like this needs a lot of effort to get to its target, from producing to the moment of impact, and the chance for a hit are not even good…
if you have so many sea based targets to hit, build more u-boats, maybe a few smaller ones for coastal waters and rivers… they are flexible, relieable and i bet 1000 times more stealth than this nutcase.
