Russia is forming a local force in the Eastern Ghouta region near the Syrian capital, Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on January 10.
According to the UK-based monitoring group, Russian forces deployed in the city of Douma, the biggest urban center in Eastern Ghouta, are recruiting locals who joined the reconciliation process when the region was liberated.
“The Russian center, where recruitment requests are submitted, is witnessing a large turnout by the city’s young men, the number of applicants has reached around 400, so far,” the group’s report reads.
The SOHR said that the new group will be commanded by Russian forces, which will also provide financial and logistic support.
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) liberated the Eastern Ghouta region more than a year ago in a large-scale operation. Several terrorist groups had occupied the region in the early years of the crisis and divided its areas among them.
The situation in Eastern Ghouta is mostly calm now. Nevertheless, a new local group could help solidify the security of the region even further.
