Russia Is Going To Start Building Helicopter Carriers After 2020

French-made Mistral-class helicopter carrier

Russia will start designing and building helicopter carriers after 2020 when it completes design work on a new large landing ship, Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Viktor Bursuk said on June 20.

According to Bursuk, these universal amphibious assault ships are stipulated by the shipbuilding program and will be built at the second stage of the program’s implementation.

President of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexei Rakhmanov said that “there will undoubtedly be competition among design bureaus” within the corporation.

Earlier the Russian state-run news agency TASS reported citing a source in the Russian defense industry that the Russian Defense Ministry and the United Shipbuilding Corporation had agreed that the construction of domestic helicopter carriers would begin in 2020 at the Severnaya Verf Shipyard.

According to the report, two such warships are planned to be built. The delivery of the first one is expected in 2024. The second warship is expected to be delivered to the Navy in 2026. The warships will reportedly have a diesel gas turbine installation. They will carry out Kamov Ka-52, Ka-27, Ka-29 and Ka-31 gunships.

Russia was set to receive two Mistral-class helicopter carriers from France in early 2015. However, France broke the contract expaining its decision with the Russian involvement into the crisis in Ukraine. Thus, Moscow was forced to consider producing own universal amphibious assault ships.

We’ll see what they are good for. For supplying troops on shore, giving assistance to landing units.. They are good.. till somebody aims them with a Cruise missile..

Brother Ma

Well same could be said of other powers’ ship as well . Could they not? In anycase ,such ships will be used against secondary powers in the main not USA etc. Ie like fighting Syrian rebels .

Daniel Castro

knowing the russians they will be stuffed with the best in missile defense the world can offer.

But hey, any ship in modern warfare is just a sitting duck anyway…

Wise Gandalf

It is not so.

Smaug

It goes without saying that this is because Russia can’t afford any more real carriers. Although I question the usefulness of this because it doesn’t offer immediate and overwhelming air superiority that even a small carrier would bring. What this is a huge moving gas station.

Brother Ma

I disagree. In a hot war between us and russia these are minnows . US carriers would be tactically nuked in first five secs of war i say . Us will try to do the same with Russia’s to at least not allow build- up on home shores?

Wise Gandalf

tactically nuked in first five secs of war

russian rocket have photon engine??

Daniel Castro

I would say there would be close to zero big surface warships still floating after the first day in a widespread all-out nuclear conflict. All big surface ships, carriers, chopper carriers, cruisers, landing ships, etc., will be nuked… all oil tankers and big transport ships too…

Also all airstrips, all ports, all military bases, all big airports, all naval bases… Basically, every meaninguful strategic target will be turned to ashes and completely irradiated, some of course just bombed with conventional weapons. (comercial ships would be taken down by piracy and subs in due time).

WW3 may not be the end of manking, but it would be the end of civilization as we know.

Wise Gandalf

You all forget 1 thing: cerreers have perfect missile protection. You need to fire dozens of rockets to hit with one. This is also for nuclear warheads, if the defense sytem shot down the nuclear rocket 20 kms before target, the warhead will not explode. So this is not so eas as is presented in fake news.

Daniel Castro

Carrier will be dealth with subs. Also, if you nuke the sea close enough the entire carrier group sinks.

Carriers are prime targets my friend, they will sink first, even if several nukes are used to destroy one carrier group, the strategic value of the target is too big to let it live.

Bob

In 1980’s a leading US admiral was asked how long US capital ships – carriers – would last in a hot war with, the then, Soviet Union – his estimate was likely a day at sea, or at best a week – provided they all stayed moored in US harbors.

Wise Gandalf

this is correct. so, not 5 seconds :)

Brother Ma

Sorry Wise Gandalf. I used a little poetic license.

Bob

Completely wrong set of assumptions. These are dedicated assault vessels – designed for rapid landing of infantry with armored support vehicles, all with assault helicopter over-cover. The hull internals are designed to stack APCs and tanks and the flight decks designed to operate KA-50/52 choppers . As usual you are completely uniformed – and your comments are reflective of your assumptions and fantasies – not reality.

jako

Russia was sooo lucky with those huge over priced French bath tubs ! And those idiots Medvedev and Serdyukov wanted to buy that crap. Two of those tubs would cost 1 BILLION ! Luckily the frogs have refused and now they can even sell Russian choppers to Egypt because of that!

Wise Gandalf

Hard thing.
