Russia is investigating a recent drone attack that injured three of its service members in Syria’s northeastern region, the Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported on July 18.

The attack, which took place on July 16, targeted a gathering of Russian and Syrian troops in the vicinity of the town of al-Darbasiyah right on the border with Turkey. Three Syrian service members were also injured in the attack.

According to the ANHA, Russian investigators visited the attack site. Later, the investigator held a meeting in al-Darbasiyah’s coordination center. The meeting was reportedly attended by a senior Russian officer.

“The meeting lasted for an hour, after that the delegation headed to the city of al-Qamishily,” ANHA’s reporter said.

Kurdish sources accused the Turkish military of carrying out the attack. The drone used in the attack was a quadcopter armed with a small explosive charge. The Turkish military operates such drones.

The drone attack on Russian troops in northeastern Syria was a serious provocation. If Turkey is indeed responsible, its relations with Russia will witness a setback.

As I said before it’s time for Russia to bring out the sledgehammer for Erdogan, pain is the only language he understands.

Assad must stay

i agree hondred procent, i am beyond sick and tired of russias coddling for erdogan, he deserves a brutal beating, not anymore coddling at all

Cromwell

FFS,Russia take the fucking gloves off.

FlorianGeyer

If indeed the Turks are directly responsible they will have considered that they would be held to account. This in turn suggests that the Turks are creating a scenario of some sort.

It is therefore important not to fall into a strategic trap set by the Turks. A response will come, BUT that will be when the Russians have the initiative.

Assad must stay

interesting what sort of scenario do you think they have in mind?

FlorianGeyer

The most benign scenario could be a warning to Russia to withdraw aid from Libya, via Egypt etc.

At worst it could be a direct attempt to goad Russia into a major assault on Turkish terrorists and by extension, the Turkish Army. All this in the strategy to draw NATO into the conflict. Western nations are all in a pe-ordained financial and ethnic identity mess that is now spinning out of control. WAR has always been a unifying method of control.

The silliest scenario could be as simple as a rogue Turk using an armed drone without proper Turkish military authority.

Assad must stay

I would drone a Turkish convoy or gathering or outpost in response

Cromwell

It doesn’t matter if its the Turks or their jihadi boyfriends,as far as i am concerned they are the same entity, that ceasefire was a huge mistake, the SAA were on a roll towards Idlib, now the Turk have thousands more troops and weapons in the area,so it will now cost many more lives to get them out and some could be Russian.

FlorianGeyer

I agree, yet there was always the risk of NATO wading into Idlib back then. Thus far the Russian , Syrian and Iranian strategy has achieved what NATO thought was impossible in Syria.

This conflict is as difficult to navigate as the shifting sands of a desert.

King Cliff

Russia have the means to seal Syria airspace and they need to do it and let anyone knows they mean business, especially the greedy Turkish government.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

They can’t in the areas the US operates, and this is where the US operate, they could come to an arrangement with the US though, that’s possible.

Assad must stay

they should and they can, US has no say, they are not invited by assad, russia is

Willing Conscience (The Truths

Might makes right not morals or legality, if the bully wants your lunch money and he’s actually heaps bigger than you guess what, you lose your lunch money. Have no fear, Putin and Trump ALWAYS come to come suitable arrangement that accommodates both parties, I don’t think this will be a problem at all. The US don’t want the Russians setting up bases in the Kurdish homelands because they know the Russians are obliged to reopen the M4 highway and conduct joint patrols with Turkey, something the Kurds are totally opposed to, but agreeing to enforce a no fly zone with Russia against Turkish aviation would actually suit US interests just as much as it would Russian interests.

Cromwell

Of course they can,you don’t come to an arrangement with an occupier, you eject them.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

How does Assad do that is the simple question, how do you eject them, and if you have an answer for that it should also be applicable to the Turks too, so now tell us all how we do it, that way we can get rid of the Americans and the Turks once and for all, so what’s your winning grand strategy, I’m listening.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

Accidents happen, that’s war, but letting the Turks and their proxies into the area in the first place was the real crime, and now the Russians are suffering the consequences of their actions, that Memorandum of Understanding that gave away this area is just as bad as the one Russia made with Turkey to give away Afrin, and Russia’s been bombing that area over the last few days with their aircraft, maybe they should do the same thing here too. Hasn’t anyone noticed the Kurds aren’t screaming blue murder at the Turks anymore, at least not as much as they normally do, and that’s because the Turkish backed Kurds in the Syrian National Council [SNC] have been engaged in successful power sharing negotiations with the US backed Syrian Democratic Council [SDC] and their military arm the Syrian Democratic Forces [[SDF], most of you have no idea what the significance if this is but it’s deadly serious, in simple terms it means the Turks are actually getting a say in the negotiations about power sharing in the autonomous region, and that’s the last thing Assad wants to hear, Russia, the US, and Turkey might all see that as a good development but Assad definitely won’t.

aussie

putin is a pussy when it comes to turkey, because he wants to pull them away from the usa, but the usa does not really want the turkish mutt anyway

Wayne Nicholson

This doesn’t make sense. Why would the Turks ruin their relationship with Russia over a meaningless attack on Russians? They gain nothing strategically or tactically and ruining their relations with Russia only makes their objectives in Turkey harder to achieve and potentially gets Turkish soldiers killed.

Moral is reportedly low already in the units sent into Idlib …. now their own people have attacked the one country that can bring death from above against them with a pea shooter? I’m no fan of Erdogan or the games the Turks are playing in Syria or Libya but this just doesn’t make sense.

Aleks Noir

Turks must be rolled out of syria, back to their caves.
