On October 25, Russia launched the lead ship of a new class of ice-rated warships, the 8,500-ton ‘Ivan Papanin’, at the Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg. The ‘combat icebreaker’ is designed for security operations in the Arctic region.

The work on the Ivan Papanin started in April 2017 and the warship is expected to be commissioned in 2022-2023. The 114-meter-long warship can be used as a patrol ship, a tug or an icebreaker for other vessels.

The Ivan Papanin is armed with Kalibr cruise missiles and a 76.2mm naval gun. It includes a helipad, with a hangar for a reconnaissance helicopter and bays for two Raptor-class speedboats.

Not one of the pretty ish Russian naval ships

FlorianGeyer

But a well designed ship that will do the job intended very well, I am sure.

kraaiiii

icebreakers, but also weaponised icebreakers is something Russia is expert in :)

FlorianGeyer

Yes indeed, and with the US navy swanning around the worlds seaways as ‘de facto’ pirate’s, there is a need for icebreakers that have defence systems.

Arrgh ! The secret is out. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/32b15a2a3b0b3ff065953ed3dfd652d601dd7951df600b7834da18f86ca0926b.jpg

So true as well. :)

Lol!

An icebreaker with speedboats? Doesn’t sound like the best design to me. Surely Russia has crafts that can move over ice and water both. The speedboats they should just keep deflated in the back.

Dawn

No one is going to use speed boats on ice.. whom would they be chasing in arctic ice anyway? Polar bears, or pirate icebreakers? :)

Rodger

If they aren’t going to use them then why bring them?

Dawn

For patrolling in water :) – most of the arctic region is just that – cold water.. And where there is ice – there is no one to patrol against..

Concrete Mike

For an icebreaker its pretty sexy.

Nothing wrong with that boat!

Just reading about that, over on Stalker Zone. Remind me, but, how many ice breakers, in working order does that US have? The same US that has not signed the ‘Law of the Sea Covenant’, which relates to the Arctic Sea, but, believes it is in control of the Arctic, as the world looks on laughing.

Arctic Patrol Belongs to Russia!… https://www.stalkerzone.org/arctic-patrol-belongs-to-russia/

Whilst the people of Russia are happily seranading Washington DC, with this track.
