Air defense systems are currently the main focus of military-technical cooperation between Russia and Iran, Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation Director Dmitry Shugayev revealed on September 1.
“Right now, the most important area for Iran is air defense systems. This topic didn’t just come up out of the blue, so to speak; it has been under discussion for quite some time. Moreover, they have our S-300 system in service, which, by and large, is proving to be quite effective,” he told Vesti.
Shugayev noted that other types of weapons, such as aircraft and small arms, are also being discussed with the Islamic Republic.
“So the entire range of weapons that we offer for export, especially to our strategic partners, is on the agenda in one way or another,” he added.
Military-technical cooperation between Russia and Iran has grown significantly in recent years, with Moscow delivering Yak-130 jet trainers to the Islamic Republic before the 12-day Israeli war last year, and supplying Mi-28NE attack helicopters right after the conflict.
Shugayev’s latest remarks indicate that the U.S.-led attack on the Islamic Republic this year has not halted or slowed down the partnership. This is, of course, not surprising considering that Moscow has been very open about its support for Tehran’s right to self-defense.
During a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on September 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed again that Moscow stands in solidarity with the Iranian people in the fight for their interests.
“We welcomed the conclusion in June of this year of the Iranian-American memorandum on a ceasefire, but, unfortunately, the truce proved unstable and too fragile,” Putin said.
He added that Russia had been seeking to provide Iran with assistance during the difficult period, including supplies of necessary goods.
Despite the tensions, Moscow and Tehran had maintained the momentum of their trade and economic cooperation from the previous year, he noted.
For his part, Pezeshkian said Iran supported Russia’s position on moving away from a unipolar world order. He described relations between Tehran and Moscow as “strategic” and said they “helped Iran confront the United States.”
There are few details on ongoing military-technical cooperation between the two countries, but Shugayev’s remarks indicate that Russia is currently helping Iran rebuild its air defenses. Moscow supplied dozens of air defenses to the Islamic Republic in recent decades, including S-300 long-range systems. For Tehran, long- and medium-range air defenses are now a priority.

only the complete dismemberment of russia and the death of all alawites and christians would be a fair enough payment for the betrayal perpetrated by putler and assad. all alawites should be killed by the iranians so that these criminals would never think of repeating december 2024.
