Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Russia on September 20 as voting ended in the State Duma elections. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it downed 1,951 Ukrainian drones and eight cruise missiles over Russian regions in 24 hours, and vowed to intensify strikes on military targets in Kyiv. That same day, Russian forces used drones to strike Ukrainian logistics centers, warehouses, ports, and vessels supporting Ukraine’s military.
In the Kyiv region, a Fire Point warehouse was destroyed in Boyarka, about 11 kilometers southwest of Kyiv. It stored components and launch boosters for long-range drones. In Kyiv, the Radionix plant was hit. It produces guidance systems for the Flamingo, Neptune, FP-7, and FP-9 missiles. A Beeline data center used to transmit intelligence was also hit, along with Rise Company and Eko-Market warehouses.
In the Odesa region, a cargo ship that had delivered military supplies was hit at the port of Odesa. A Nova Poshta logistics center about 1.5 kilometers north of the city was also hit. It was used to distribute military supplies. A tanker used to deliver cargo for Ukraine’s military was destroyed. At the port of Chornomorsk, another cargo ship carrying military equipment was hit, and an ammunition depot was destroyed in Petrivka, about 38 kilometers north of Odesa.
In the Vinnytsia region, a railway facility was struck. Widespread train delays are reported across Ukraine, with some routes between the west and east delayed by more than nine hours.
On the night of September 20, Ukraine launched a large-scale attack on Russia. Russia’s Defense Ministry said the goal was to disrupt voting in the State Duma elections. Russia’s military reported downing Ukrainian attack drones and long-range cruise missiles over Russian regions. Another cruise missile veered off course and fell in an unpopulated area. All Flamingo missiles were destroyed as they approached civilian targets in the Moscow region.
450 drones were shot down as they approached Moscow. Mayor Sergey Sobyanin called it the largest attack on the city to date. At least three targets were hit: the CHP-22 thermal power plant in Dzerzhinsky, the Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya, and a logistics hub in Sofyino, where warehouses burned all night.
The Ukrainian drone attack deliberately hit civilian areas, leaving civilians dead and wounded. Governor Andrey Vorobyov said at least two people were killed and at least six were wounded. A 44-year-old woman in Sofrino was killed when a drone hit her home. Five people were wounded in the same attack, including two minors. In Ramenskoye, the roof of a 21-story apartment building caught fire. 400 people were evacuated, including 70 children, and 20 vehicles were damaged. In Kotelniki, drones hit three apartment buildings, and fires damaged apartments on three floors. Another drone hit a building near Orekhovy Boulevard.
Zelensky confirmed the strikes, saying that FP-1, RZ-100, MICH-2000, Palyanytsia, Vendetta, Lyuty, Bars, and Sichen drones were used, as well as Flamingo and Pelican missiles.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the attempted mass attack on Moscow failed. It also said that, in response to strikes on civilian areas, Russian forces will intensify strikes against military targets in Kyiv.
