On March 23, the Russian Defense Ministry sent a 13th IL-76 military transport aircraft with medial equipment and specialists to fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak to Italy.
Earlier, the Russian military announced that it was sending 9 IL-76 aircraft with 8 mobile medical teams, at least 100 viral agent defense experts and various military equipment (dozens of pieces) to assist Italy in the war on COVID-19. However, when the Russian COVID-19 response team deployed in Italy, it appeared that the situation there was worse that it had been even expected. So, the Russian side opted to increase its means and forces involved in the campaign to assist the Italian side.

Amid the acute crisis with the outbreak in Italy, it’s interesting to note that Russia, China and Cuba are the main states that are now assisting the country. At the same time, the ‘democratic nations’ led by the United States remain silent or prefent to demonstrate their moral support to the Italian nation.

Define deadly? Any one of the Bubonic plagues in the middle ages killed upwards of 50% of those infected and hundreds of millions. It came in waves over a thousand years. Corvid-19 isn’t nearly as deadly as any of these however this virus is unique in it’s contagiousness and that it lies asymptomatic from 4 to 14 days while still being contagious. It also can be completely asymptomatic in some people, show mild symptoms in others but in some people it causes pneumonia and acute respiratory failure that requires a stay in an ICU unit. Once you’re on a ventilator you have a reported 5% chance of surviving.
Be wary of statistics like mortality rates or who is vulnerable with this virus. Because it lies hidden or show mild symptoms that can be mistaken for cold or flu no one really know the real mortality rate or who it affects.
Focusing on these kind of numbers hide the real danger of this pandemic. The danger is the speed at which it spreads, that it spreads undetected and that so far in the USA 16% of those diagnosed end up in hospital with pneumonia.
People are also arguing correctly that it kills mainly those over the age of 65. that’s true but what they don’t tell you is that the majority that end up in hospital are between 30 and 65 simply because there are so many more people in that cohort. The danger isn’t dying of Covid-19 itself but because it spreads exponentially it will overload hospitals and crash them in a matter of days. Also there are no vaccines so the hospital staff treating patients are certain to catch the virus.
You certainly don’t want to be a corvid-19 patient stacked like cordwood outside a hospital waiting for the triage nurse to decide if you’re worth saving and you sure wouldn’t want to be sick in hospital when this virus hits hard and you better hope you don’t have an accident this summer either.
I was a contractor who worked on hospital interiors for 30 years in an part of Ontario hit hard by the SARS pandemic in 2003 and my wife was a nurse practitioner working on in an ICU during the same epidemic. They aren’t fucking with you when they say we have to slow this pandemic to a crawl if we want to avert a disaster. They are getting thousands of patients a day needing ICU beds in Italy and the pandemic is just starting to rise exponentially …were lucky to have 5000 ICU beds in all of Canada … 90% are occupied and what makes an ICU bed isn’t the room or the equipment but the specialized doctors, nurses and technicians that require years of training and experience to do their jobs. You can build ventilators but you can’t build respirologists and ICU nurses.
