Italian newspaper La Stampa reported that Russia’s group of military doctors and experts most certainly included GRU intelligence officers, in other words spies.
This followed reports by the same newspaper that the Russian aid sent to Italy was largely “useless,” but apparently it didn’t have enough friction, so something more popular is needed, to remind the public that “evil GRU agents” exist and they’re closer than Italians would think.
Russia has sent 104 individuals to assist Italy.
“Without a doubt, there are GRU officers among them,” former NATO chemical weapons expert Hamish De Bretton-Gordon told the paper.
It should be noted that they asked a “chemical weapons expert” and he’s British, after all, London has quite a bit of experience in revealing GRU agents, after the entire fiasco that the Sergey Skripal investigation turned into.
The Russian Defense Ministry accused the Italian paper of “hiding behind the ideals of free speech” to spread stories reminiscent of “anti-Soviet propaganda.”
Then, the Italian government commented in response to the Russian Defense ministry’s statement.
“While grateful for Russia’s support, one cannot but criticize the inappropriate tone of certain expressions used by the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman,” the government said in a statement.
“Freedom of expression and the right to criticize are fundamental values of our country,” it said.
It noted that Russia had “the right to respond (to the allegations), but in a formal and correct manner.”
Then, the Russian Foreign Ministry responded.

In response to this stuffing, it was possible to establish an intermediary – the Giosar company registered in London, whose representative categorically refused to provide any information about the transaction, which was mentioned in the article, and to answer relevant questions, including regarding the location, cost and characteristics of the cargo , as well as its sender and recipient.
When they started to understand, it turned out that this was a purely commercial operation, which some foreign structures tried to organize according to an opaque scheme. At the same time, the Russian authorities were not informed in advance about this supply and had no relation to it. All this is served by the Stampa newspaper in the context of Russia’s humanitarian efforts.
I think it has already become clear to everyone that some traders, in search of profit, are apparently trying to use problems, trouble, and in this case, the tragedy of Italy. We will stop this misinformation and do it tough, on a regular basis.”
Then, La Stampa, published another report, apologizing and expressing its surprise over the Russian comments.
“”Qui fodit foveam, incidet in eam (whoever digs a pit will end up in it sooner or later).” An authentic intimidation that once again confirms – if ever there was a need – the tools with which Russia controls information, and beyond. But above all the unacceptable attempt to export these methods beyond their borders, in our country, in Europe. A fact that risks becoming a serious precedent if our government does not ask for immediate clarifications. And above all the necessary apology,” La Stampa said.
“Our articles have raised questions — both from Italians and others — about the possible presence of intelligence officers in the Russian mission,” La Stampa further said.
But the paper said it still thought Russia was “demonstrating friendship and solidarity at a moment of great difficulty” for Italy.

La Stampa’s series of articles is the usual bull: few facts and lots of innuendo and insinuations (even to the point of throwing into the mix a reference to the Skripal case, as a way of suggesting an obscure motive for Russian military virologists to be in Italy, without actually saying so).
But I wonder if Russia will ever learn how media communication works. Russian propaganda strategies have to get a little more sophisticated and nuanced, or they will backfire. La Stampa’s articles would have fallen into oblivion pretty quickly and nobody would have remembered them in the span of a week. Instead, the Russian Defense Minister’s reply supplied the excuse for the ENTIRE Italian press establishment to come together and depict itself as the paladin of press freedom, while accusing Russian authorities of authoritarianism.
Have Russian authorities really not learned anything from the Douma report manipulation? The whole western press reacted to what is one of the most important and explosive news in the last decade in a pretty disciplined way: coordinated blanket silence. Russia should have done the same: let that kind of trash journalism fell on deaf years and move on. Military men are usually not media savvy. But that’s exactly the reason why the top brass should probably refrain from giving voice to his frustration (no matter how righteous) in a manner that favours Russia’s adversaries.
As an Italian I feel comfortable in saying that most of the Italian people are very thankful for Russia’s help in the fight against Coronavirus (as we are to any other Country that helped in such a difficult situation). I hope we won’t forget and that one day we will be able to return Russian generosity in kind.

Russia has the right to reply to La Stampa of course, they are a main stream Italian publication, with influence over Italian public and official views.
What I am disappointed about, is the action of the Italian government in responding to this.
A simple clarification as to the effectiveness of the Russian help and supplies would have given the Italian public the true facts, rather than the government responding with talk about Italian values.
Were Italian values of freedom and expression the reason why the EU has still not sent any aid, nor France, Britain or the USA?
In my opinion, it doesn’t even matter how effective Russia’s help was. The simple fact that Russia contributed to the fight against the Coronavirus is enough. Any contribution is welcome, according to each State capabilities and resources. I’m not questioning Russia’s help at all. I am grateful for it.
But once the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation replied with that Latin motto, the focus shifted from La Stampa’s trash journalism to the topic of Russian authorities threatening an Italian journalist. And there was no going back.
The fact that those articles were not grounded in reality, that they were built on the opinions of NATO-aligned hawks and gossip and that they amounted to spitting in the face of a nation that came to our help, suddenly became meaningless in front of a perceived aggressive response to what was being sold as a legit journalistic criticism.
The Italian government was put in the position of having to choose between commending Russian help and stepping up to defend the “tribunes of the people” (that is: the press). And that’s exactly what the Italian authorities tried to do: confirm the gratitude to Russia while at the same time chastizing the “threatening reply”. The aggressor (La Stampa) had an easy time turning the narrative upside down and passing as the victim.
To me this is a strategic communication mistake. And that’s what I was criticizing about the way Russia managed this situation.
I fully understand your stance, and appreciate that the reality of Italian gratitude is the reverse of La Stampa’s disgraceful slander. But I am also looking at daily snide attacks on Russia, China or any other non MSM approved body, through the MSM. The question should really be asked of La Stampa, where is there condemnation of the EU, US and NATO to the Italian people’s needs? I have asked my MPs, where is the PPE they told us over two weeks ago was being distributed. Why are health workers still being denied PPE, and COVID19 testing. These health workers have families whom they return to after work ffs.
Today I found out through the Daily Mail, that Russian disinformation was spreading rumours that Boris Johnson was on a ventilator. I’ve been reading and watching RT, Sputnik and other Russian sites, and didn’t see any such announcements. DM quoted Ria Novosti, but if its in Russian, then how could non Russians read it? Anyway, Al Jazeera are now questioning whether BJ is seriously ill, while the British government admit that BJ was given oxygen over the weekend. Technically, a ventilator provides oxygen to the lungs!

Have you considered that the Russians may actually have a measure of morality in their character and choose not to dip their hands into the filth of Western-style agitprop reporting? Journalism 101, never publish a story if you have to use the words, ‘if true’, ‘could be true’, or ‘possibility’. There should be a source indicating that it is true. This gives license to publish any accusation and giving it an aura of undeserved truth. Quoting a NATO flak, speculating on the possibility of GRU agents clearly falls into that category.
I’m curious about that accusation that their aid is ‘useless’ only because that is so easily fact checked that the paper should be discredited if they got that wrong (if true).
