Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said some members of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) view the al-Nusra Front terrorist group, linked with Al Qaeda, as a useful tool to against the Syrian government.
Lavrov made the statement during a press conference alongside United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and US Secretary of State John Kerry after the ISSG meeting on May 17.
The Russian FM noted that no one is stronger that the Syrian army “on ground” in Syria and noted that Kurds should be allowed to participate in the talks on the conflict.
“We expect that those objecting to the Democratic Union Party’s joining the negotiators in Geneva will withdraw their objections very soon, especially considering that these are literally one or two countries,” Lavrov said.
We remember, the previous UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva ended without any progress after the “opposition” walked out, and declared a “new war’ against the Assad government.
