As of June 16, the most active military developments in the region of Donbass are focused around Slavyansk and the Severodonetsk-Lysichansk area.
In Severodonetsk, Kyiv’s units remain in a tactical encirclements in the industrial area of the ‘Azot plant’. According to reports, up to 2,500 members of Kyiv’s forces are stuck there. They are not able to retreat to thee sector of Lysichansk controlled by their counterparts because all roads there are under fire control of Russians. This situation also does not allow to supply this grouping. Therefore, the garrison of the ‘Azot plant’ is the next candidate for ‘successful extraction’ to the Russian captivity.
Clashes also continue around Severodonetsk itself. Recently, Russian troops secured the village of Metelkino southeast of it.
At the same time, Russian forces have liberated the town of Vrubovka north of Popasnaya and thus de-facto cut off Kyiv’s troops remaining in Zolotoe, Gorskoe and surrounding areas from any link with the pro-Kyiv garrison in Slavyansk.
The situation around Slavyansk remains relatively stable with Russian units slowly advancing around Bogorodichnoe, Dolina and Sidorovo.
The situation in the western countryside of Donetsk remains same. Kyiv’s forces use fortifications created there to shell residential areas of the city and its surroundings. Positional clashes are ongoing.
Another point of positional battles is the countryside of Kharkiv city. Saltovo and Ternovoe are main hot points there. The Russians are not taking active offensive actions in this sector.
Over the past few days, Kyiv’s forces have intensified attempts to organize some kind of ‘offensive’ in Khersonand Mykolaiv regions. All of them failed. Nonetheless, it seems that Kyiv is determined to use this sector of its main hope for PR victories.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry released a fresh update on the development of the military operation in Ukraine:
The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the special military operation in Ukraine.
High-precision air-based missiles have destroyed 2 AFU command posts, 1 electronic warfare station near Pyatikhatka in Kharkov region, 1 Tochka-U missile launcher and 1 Uragan multiple rocket launcher near Barvenkovo in Kharkov region.
Operational-tactical, army and unmanned aviation have hit 57 areas of AFU manpower and military equipment concentration. 3 command posts, 1 Buk-M1 anti-aircraft missile system near Rechka, Sumy region, as well as 1 repair and recovery point of AFU armoured vehicles near Kharkov have been destroyed.
The attacks have resulted in the elimination of more than 280 nationalists, 2 ammunition depots near Razdolovka in Donetsk People’s Republic, 5 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles, 6 field artillery mounts and 11 special vehicles.
Russian air defence means have shot down 1 Su-25 aircraft of Ukrainian Air Force near Mazanovka, Kharkov region.
Also, 7 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles have been shot down near Tomina Balka, Sukhoi Stavok in Kherson region, Bolshiye Prokhody, Chistovodovka, Malaya Kamyshevakha, Kamenka in Kharkov region, and Zolotoe in Lugansk People’s Republic.
Additionally, 1 Tochka-U ballistic missile has been intercepted near Stakhanov in Lugansk People’s Republic, as well as 21 Uragan multiple-launch rockets near Chernobaevka, Sukhoi Stavok in Kherson region, Kamenka, Dolgen’koe, Malye Prokhody in Kharkov region, Donetsk, Dokuchaevsk, Sukhaya Kamenka, Yasynuvataya in Donetsk People’s Republic, Kopanki, Novozvanovka in Lugansk People’s Republic.
Missile troops and artillery have hit 195 areas of manpower and military equipment concentration, 34 command posts and 42 firing positions of AFU artillery units.
Missile troops and artillery have destroyed more than 200 nationalists, 1 electronic warfare station, 3 ammunition depots, 6 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles, 1 Grad multiple rocket launcher, 4 field artillery guns, 18 special vehicles and 2 UAV control points near Zhovtnevoe and Kul’bakino in Nikolayev region.
In total, 204 Ukrainian airplanes and 131 helicopters, 1,218 unmanned aerial vehicles, 340 anti-aircraft missile systems, 3,569 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 526 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,968 field artillery and mortars, as well as 3,647 units of special military vehicles were destroyed during the operation.

The Ukrainian army has become a shadow of its former self, most of the good trained soldiers and officers from before the war lost and being replaced by ill trained reservists. It’s logistics and communication networks are under constant attack. The Russians on the other hand have learned from their early mistakes and use the cover of overwhelming firepower to advance. It’s the WW1 tactic of bite and hold. Attack a village, defeat its defenders, dig in, defeat the counter attack, bring up supplies and above all the artillery, rinse and repeat. The Russians do not suffer from Ukrainian battlefield interdiction or air strikes, their networks are fully intact and their army, while bloodied is still intact. I reckon they probably suffer half or even less of the losses that the Ukrainians do. Just like the Germans did in 1941 fighting against Soviet reservists.

There’s a difference between the pre-war active duty Ukrainian army and the conscripts and reserves that have been called up to fight, which could probably easily double, triple or quadruple the active duty army.
It’s like Operation Barbarossa in 1941. The Wehrmacht destroyed the pre-war active duty Red Army withing 2 weeks. After that new Red Army divisions and armies kept appearing from reservists again and again and by the end of that year the Red Army was probably as big still as at the start of the war. But those were all reservists and that army was brittle as all the good trained soldiers and officers and their support infrastructure had been lost and needed to be rebuilt from scratch. The same seems to be happening in the Ukraine. Kyiv keeps on throwing new formations of reservists into the meatgrinder and their combat worthiness seems to be declining as the old active duty army that knew how to fight and did well in the opening weeks, has been lost. And is its support infrastructure.
Which is also why despite now getting better weaponry then when the war started the AFU is not able to utilize those better weapons as they require well trained troops fighting to a certain military doctrine, neither of which the Ukraine has.

AFU already lost at least 100k men including killed, captured, and injured. That’s at least 50% of their armed forces. They’re already struggling with capable manpower to hold Severodonetsk. You cannot replace years of training with poorly equipped conscripts. After AFU collapsed in the Donbass region, Russia will probably take Kharkov and Zaporizhzhia.
