Russia is prepared to discuss the inclusion of the Kinzhal hypersonic missile and the Poseidon (Status-6 Oceanic Multipurpose System) underwater unmanned vehicle (UUV) in the future Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), RIA cited Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov.
The Sarmat ICBM and the Avangard hypersonic boost-glide vehicle fall under the scope of the future treaty.
“Concerning our new systems, we have told Americans… that the Sarmat and Avangard [systems] will be included in the future treaty,” Ryabkov said.
He said that Russia was open on discussions when it came to the Kinzhal hypersonic missile, Poseidon UUV, as well as the Burevestnik cruise missile.
“If the deal remains intact at the moment that the systems will be put on alert… concerning Kinzhal, Burevestnik and Poseidon, we are open. We are prepared to discuss the issue, but only in the broader context of the dialogue on strategic stability, meaning we will also ask the US some questions,” Ryabkov said, noting that Russia had many such questions, ” the deputy foreign minister said.
He further said that it was unclear what the US position was on the topic.
“Is the US willing to deal with this topic in this manner, I don’t think so. And everything that the senior deputy secretary of state for political affairs David Hale has said on this subject in recent days, as well as what acting senior assistant secretary of state for arms control Christopher Ford has said failed to add clarity. We saw nothing but slogans and attempts to denigrate Russian politics,” the Russian diplomat added.
His comments came just one day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia was ready to extend the NEW START without any conditions by year’s end.
“There is another aspect of the disarmament agenda – New START. It is about to expire. All of our proposals to extend the deal are on the table. So far, we have not received any reaction from partners. In this regard, I want to reiterate Russia’s position: Russia is ready to immediately, as soon as possible, right before the end of this year, without any preconditions, to extend the New START treaty,” the president said.
Under the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which was signed in 2010 and is set to expire in February 2021, the United States and Russia agreed to reduce the number of strategic nuclear missiles by half and limit the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550.
The Poseidon is a nuclear-powered underwater drone, one of Russia’s next-generation nuclear weapons, armed with a multi-megaton warhead that could create city-smashing waves. There is still quite little information know about the Poseidon, but it does appear quite intimidating.
The Kinzhal reportedly range of more than 2,000 km, a speed of more than Mach 10, and an ability to perform evasive maneuvers at every stage of flight carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads. Reports have since indicated that the Kinzhal missile has entered service and that up to 10 MiG-31s have been modified to carry the missiles. The 10 aircraft deployed on experimental combat duty in the Southern Military District, bordering Ukraine and the Black Sea.
