Within two weeks, Russia will supply the Syrian Air Defense Forces (SADF) with two regimental sets of the S-300 air defense system, Russia’s Kommersant newspaper reported on September 25 citing own sources aware of the situation.
According to the report, the supplied systems will protect the Syrian coastal area as well as the country’s borders with Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.
“The delivery will be started with two-four [sets of S-300], and then, if it’s needed, this number can be expanded to six-eight,” Kommersant’s source stated commenting on the epxected number of the systems, which would be delivered.
On the same day, Vladimir Ermakov, Director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that the arguments of states, who previously asked not to deliver S-300 systems to Syria, had no effect anymore.
“There is nothing at all in the area of reduction of strategic offensive weapons, missile arsenals and nuclear weapons, but the Russia-US agreements. And the current situation allows to assume that the probability of concluding some new agreements in the coming years is not very high,” Ermakov said during a press conference.
He also commented on claims by US National Security Adviser John Bolton that the S-300 delivery would be a “significant escalation”. The diplomat responded by saying that the supplies will in fact contribute to the stabilization of the region.
“The systems are purely defensive, so when the US says that defensive weapons are undermining its national security, it’s fudging,” Ermakov stated. “In fact, such actions will lead to the stabilization of the region, because we will be able to close the airspace where necessary, and, first of all, our servicemen who fulfill their international duty at the invitation of the Syrian government will be protected.”
excellents news formidable :)
Eight S300 might be enough for 2hours. That’s a political demonstration – not a military one…
It is deterrence that the US and Israel can’t just ignores. Tens to twenty aircraft’s downed wouldn’t make a good show of their supposed impunity in the act.
Off course Israel/US can ignore them. The S-300 is for Russia. Russia already have S-400. The new batteries will just collect dust as the S-400. Albert Pike is right.
But you duffers were hoping…………………………………………..LOL.
You don’t make any sense anymore.
When did he ever?
It’s fear.
Yeah and he said in an earlier comment that this was a game changer or huge or whatever.
Yes, exactly.
8 battalions of S300 ( 8 vehicles with 4 launchers per battalion x 8 = 256 launchers ready to fire) will provide enough firepower to deal with IAF and the FUKUS Air Force in the area. Then you have the modernized S200, BUK M2, short range air defenses like Tor and Pantsir, extensive EW coverage over Syria, and a new fire control and command center for integrating air defenses over Syria.
Then you have the Russian S300 V4, S400, S350 and air superiority fighters.
From the above figures combined Syrian and Russian defenses can fire over 500 medium to long range surface to air missiles before they have to reload.
How many planes can FUKUS and Israel deploy against Syria in a single attack?
‘The delivery will be started with two-four [sets of S-300], and then, if it’s needed, this number can be expanded to six-eight,” Kommersant’s source stated commenting on the epxected number of the systems, which would be delivered.’
So Yes they can be re-loaded – if there are already replacements in Syria- but for now it’s two, with in total 8 S-300. If you have 150 incomming tomahawks, then those eight are better be fired off fast…
You are not reading the text properly, a regiment consists of 2 battalions, a battalion consists of 32 launchers. What you are alluding to is the initial batch delivered out of the overall shipment.
You do not use S300 missiles to intercept low flying Tomahawks, EW, Pantsir and other Soviet era short range SAMs can neutralize subsonic unmenuvrable Tomahawks easily.
There is’t even the word ‘battalion’ anywhere in the whole text:
“Within two weeks, Russia will supply the Syrian Air Defense Forces (SADF) with two regimental sets of the S-300 air defense system”
Just because you wish stuff to be a certain way, doesn’t make it into reality…
A regiment is usually 2 battalions. Maybe you should leave this to the grownups?
Maybe you should think how much seven planes can load, certainly not launchers and canisters with S300 in them, enough for 4 battalions:
“Seven (7) Russian Air Force Cargo Planes arrived at Khmeimim Air Base This Morning” http://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news/u-s-national-news/3187-major-development-syria-2
I suppose they are single use only planes, carry a load park and forget?
Well they do have to fly many times – they have to load, to unload that all takes time. But you know also that the trailers look to long for airtransport…
Here in New South Wales we hire an Erickson air crane to fight bush fires.
The thing is huge, and they fly it to Oz in a Russian plane.
The Russians make the biggest planes in the world.
Even the US uses them when needed.

That’s a convincing picture…
Maybe you need to study what a regiment of S300 and S 400 consists of.

The link shows a picture, which lists what’s all part of a battery of S300:
http://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news/world-news/3192-publicly-confirmed-russia-giving-s-300-missile-system-to-syria
I count 3 huge trucks, with huge trailers for radar, then you have the not so small two launchers. Even those seven big antonov planes have to fly a few times to get all this into Syria. That type of equipment comes better by see, and my guess is, that’s where the two weeks came from.
How many batteries there will be – that’s up to Putin. The more there are, the more it will make Bibi wild. And the less there are, it will make Bibi adventurous…
The schematic you provided shows the radar and control vehicles and four mobile units with four launchers each, that is half a battalion. To optimize the search capability of the radar and tracking of targets, of up to 150-300, you need many missiles, therefore more launchers would be attached with radar and command system..
Yes and by definition, Protecting the Syrian borders with Iraq also includes the Syrian border with the US occupied Kurdish areas east of the Euphrates :)
You don’t need S300’s to defeat Tomahawk missiles. Russia has been downing 95% of fired Tomahawks electronically.
The S300’s are to shoot down aircraft.
Simpleton – S300 is mobile and Russia can probably detect the moment your sea vessels pop them off, thus with a redeployment of 5 minutes they needn’t even engage them but rather for instance let BGM109 hit decoys.
Thanks for the good analysis!
Excellent comment
The total border lenght is :
Land boundaries: total: 2,253 km border countries: Iraq 605 km, Israel 76 km, Jordan 375 km, Lebanon 375 km, Turkey 822 km
Coastline: 193 kilometres
If you look at the above “According to the report, the supplied systems will protect the Syrian coastal area as well as the country’s borders with Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.”
So…… it needs to protect the following:
Coastal = 193 Km Israel = 76 Km The Lebanon = 375 Km Jordon = 375 Km Iraq = 605 Km
= 1624 Km
8 off is enough when you bring in the other air defence units Syria has. I mean if they attack from Iraq, all hell is going to kick off.
2 hours of what, Israeli prostration.
“Eight S300 might be enough for 2hours”(c). That might be enough for 2 hours of massive saturation attack. But lets look at what’s really happening on the ground. So far Israeli was not able to destroy all S-200 and S-125. Did you people forget that Libersnake already promised to destroy any Syrian AD system if they dare targeting Israeli fighter jets? They sweared to retaliate and destroy S-200 regiment that downed their F-16 but it is still serving and protecting Syria. Together with automated command systems installed on other Syrian and EW countermeasures will make Israelis agressive actions much less effective and much more dangerous.
Putin and Trump are both wild cards. For now even one single S300 fullfills the politcal objective to make Bibi think. Maybe Putin thinks that he can avoid an escalation. If it will escalate into a Trump – Putin war, then Putin will mostlikely move his main punch to europe. Then we are there, where everybody pretends, that he doesn’t want to be. What then happens – nobody knows.
So we will see what Libersnake (I like that) does. So far there hasn’t been -besides of Bolton- a real reaktion from Trump, without Trumps backing Libersnake want do what he does…
Lets see how process unfolds. I just want to remind that it is better to look at overall proccess at as wide picture as we pissibly can – both in territory and time.
What would have happened if the Russian plane hadn’t been there, would another IAF plane been shot down? They were using the Russians as human shields for a reason. If they weren’t vulnerable they wouldn’t have done so. Unless they were trying to draw fire onto the Russian plane simply to destroy it.
The entire S series of long range anti-aircraft missiles from the 200s to the 500s is interoperable and upgradeable using later technology. The S-200s are probably using newer more advanced electronics and internal hardware. The missile itself is highly capable in terms of flight performance.
Nope.
Finally…Mo’ Missiles…Syrian Iron Dome…. Shoot down USraeli Birds…
I’ll just make it clear that any dead pilots of the US coalitions would be hard to be taken accountably due to their dubious position in Syria. They have no businesses to interfere even if there’s a real civil war and this already have been made clear and admitted that the groups in Idlib is Al Nusra terrorists.
The US allegedly in Syria to defeat ISIS. So killed pilots for trying to attack Syrian government position did not make any sense whatsoever.
2 sept “within 2 weeks”. 22 sept “within 2 weeks”. Today “within 2 weeks”. “they will arrive tomorrow” as they say in Africa. THIS IS HUGE!
If Russia is saying it like that. It’s already in Syria and Syrians already know how to use thus complex machines
Two regimental sets: Two-Three battalions. That is eight launchers per battalion. All in all, 32 launchers and 128 missiles plus reloads. Fairly decent size. Add in Pantsir and Tor systems to protect the larger launchers and these batteries are tough nuts to crack. Any Israeli attempt to take them down would require the use of dozens of aircraft at considerable risk of being shot out of the sky. Though, such systems are designed to deter and rest assured this move is meant to deter. Lets hope the Israeli’s get the message. Though, as they say in my country “Tell him he’s dreaming.”
Now add Russian jammers to it , Israeli stand zero chance.. The only option is to saturate syria with 1k misiiles every 5-20 minutes. This will then allow Syria and Russia to respond. 3rd world War started. Russia can destroy all us bases in Middle east within 1hour.. So expect 3rd world war to come to an end within hours if Nuclear is not employed..
two-four [sets of S-300] is not enough to cover entire Syria, specially when S-300 can maximum cover 195 km only (depends on missile). This is enough to cover Damascus and maybe little COVER SYRIAN COAST. The politicians has no clue and show that Russia will do minor dressing, and anoher BS from Russia
Wow those Russians are so stupid and you are so smart, you should be the US President.
Or be vice president so that if anything happens to Trump, there will be a continuity of genius.
John Doe is even more mentally challenged than Trump :)
You know it could be that even the Syrians do not know exactly what they will be getting. Press reports and statements may not be all that reliable. Only when the systems have arrived will the situation be crystal clear, and we may never really know what the true situation is. Also may be it is better not to be too public with all the details.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out and to what extent it mitigates IAF attacks and US and other violations of Syrian airspace.
Great news! Israels threats that they would destroy Syrians 1 S-300 two days ago, has now made Russia up it to 2 sets of 4 lol. Now the Syrian military with help of their allies can begin a buildup of responsive missile forces. So if Israel ever invades or attacks again, Syria can launch thousands of missiles into Tel Aviv as payment for Israel bombing Damascus. This is it Resistance, make now the most precious time. Build up enough hardware to defend Syria forever. Well planned positions and infrastructure. Underground fiber optic communications cables. Rockets with Multiple Reentry Warheads. Syria has been week for decades which led to this current disaster. Never Again!
the problem is that deploying and training an effective enough IADS takes time and resources.
operating S300s as in Russian doctrine requires trained and skilled radar technicians, missile specialists, an infrastructure of technical and logistic devices that simply cannot be invented on the spot.
the S300 is a formidable system when correctly operated, but it’s not something that shoots down planes and rockets by point and click (like any other weapon system).
in addition, massed missile attacks can’t be stopped by SAMs alone, the adversary would design them to simply saturate the defenses. If a S300 piece can fire 6 shots before reload, it can’t manage 12 targets alone.
certainly though, if Israel starts launching hundreds of volleys of missiles into Syria, it would escalate things to never seen levels, and the consequences for such actions in the ME are ALWAYS very unpredictable.
The point is Occidental mentality can’t allow for a single pilot to be downed and killed. Regiments ( and that is plural fellas ) of S-300s is a no go for the US/Israel/UK/France and all the rest. Further, as I have said before and the map doesn’t lie, Russia is very close by and through this can control all resupply activities in that part of the region; including the gulf.
Now aside from the weapons, I am beginning to perceive why Bolton and Pompeo are freaking out: their jobs are on the line. I think they sold ‘the Donald’ a pig in a poke and it is not woking out as advertized. I know it is early but, why not …………. within one year, those two will be fired. Donald dearest will not hang onto them longer than he needs. My take, I wish well to all.
“Bolton and Pompeo are freaking out: their jobs are on the line”
oh i can hear them rattling from the other side of the ocean and some more.
like they are there to honestly perform their office and not to get money to the MIC and power to Israel and Saudia.
evidently to replace the old S200 – been thinking to launch these as decoys for Israel’s counter ballistic missile systems and surprise their retaliatory jes with S300.
