A new Russian city by the name of Sputnik with a population of 300,000 people should appear 30 kilometers from Vladivostok.

This was stated in a corresponding agreement, signed at the Eastern Economic Forum in which Russian President Vladimir Putin also took part.

“The creation of a new city Sputnik is planned on the territory of the advanced social and economic development “Nadezhdinskaya”. The building area will be 925 hectares. Within the framework of the project, it is planned to build 2.8 million square meters of housing,” the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, said in a statement circulated within the framework of the EEF.

Together with the population of the cities of Vladivostok and Artem, the population of the agglomeration could total one million people.

As noted by the deputy head of the Ministry of Eastern Development Gadzhimagomed Huseynov, the location of the new city will be attractive for developers.

“Ten minutes to the airport, 40 minutes to the center of the capital of Primorye, 15 minutes to Artem. Up to 50 thousand residents are calculated to live there at the first stage,” he said.

The agreement on the creation of the city was signed between the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic (KRDV), the Government of the Primorsky Territory, VEB.RF and ProGorod LLC.

As part of the development of the Sputnik master plan, ProGorod LLC (VEB.RF Group) will act as a master developer and will implement a set of measures for the development of the project. VEB.RF, in turn, will participate in the development of schemes for organizing project financing.

To ensure the development of a comfortable urban environment, the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, KRDV and VEB.RF will consider the possibility of using various measures and mechanisms of state support, such as the Far Eastern Quarter, Far Eastern Concession, Far Eastern Mortgage, preferential financing programs from VEB.RF and others.

Earlier, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu proposed the idea of building new cities in Siberia. In his opinion, these should be three to five large settlements, which would become economic centers of specific industries – power engineering, timber processing or petrochemistry. President Vladimir Putin later said that these proposals should be prepared and formalized.

The Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) is being held on September 2-4 on the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok. Its main theme this year is new opportunities for the Far East in a changing world. RIA Novosti is the general information partner of the EEF.

I gave you a +1, at least that was a good insult :-) It makes sense given its proximity to China. Russia has to stop begging Europe for an acceptance that will never come. Economic growth will come through Eurasia, not Ameurope.

To the other poster about calling it ‘Putingrad’, Putin is many things and he is genuinely a modest person. He does not want a city named after himself.

The better name should be Putingrad

Looks like it is somewhat close to Vladivostok. That is a beautiful area in Russian far east. Have been there. Wonder what is the requirement for foreigners to live in Russia. Would consider living there.
