Russian specialists are working to expand the range of the P-800 Oniks supersonic cruise missile, a source close to the Russian Ministry of Defense told TASS on December 8.
The Oniks is an anti-ship missile with land-attack capabilities. The export version of the missile, known as the Yakhont, has a range of 300 kilometers, while the range of the domestic Russian military version is said to be between 600 and 800 kilometers.
“The flight range of the supersonic Oniks is expected to be increased to 1,000 kilometers,” the unnamed source told the Russian news agency.
The Oniks, which was developed by NPO Mashinostroyeniya, has a maximum speed of over Mach 2 and can fly as low as ten meters while cruising.
The supersonic cruise missile can achieve a CEP [circular error probable] of less than 1.5 meter thanks to its complex guidance system, which combines an inertial navigation system and a state-of-the-art active/passive radar seeker that has a detection range of 50 kilometers.
The missile was designed to be launched from warships and submarines as well as from the ground-based Bastion-P system.
The Oniks was successfully used against terrorists’ ground targets in Syria and in the framework of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. Expanding the missile’s range will be a major upgrade for the fire power of the Russian Navy, who already field the system on a wide scale.
How about loading FOABs in some rockets and give Ukronazis a Christmas surprize?
