Russia wants Kurds in Baghdad Center against Terrorism

On Wednesday, February 3, in an interview with Italy’s Limes monthly magazine, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is interested in the inclusion of Kurds in the international Baghdad Information Center founded for the coordination in the fight against terrorists.

Lavrov said that Russia is interested to include Kurds in its work in the international Baghdad Information Center founded for the coordination in the fight against terrorists including ISIS – a prohibited terrorist group in numerous countries counting the United States and Russia.

“The international Baghdad Information Center has been operating for several months already and includes Russia, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. We are open for cooperation in any format and with other interested parties, including the Kurdish opposition and patriotic Syrian opposition. We are continuing to work closely with the anti-terrorist situation in Jordan and Egypt,” Lavrov said in that interview

In September last year, the Baghdad Information Center was established by Russia, Iran, Iraq and Syria to coordinate their efforts in the fight against terrorists including ISIS. The Information center is designed to collect, process, summarize and analyze current data about the Middle East in the context of counterterrorism measures against various terrorist groups, and to distribute intelligence between the general staffs of the four countries.

However, the Kurds are one of the largest ethnic groups in Syria, making significant resistance to the terrorist groups.

Last month the Russian Foreign Minister also admitted that Russia had been selling weapons to the Kurds who were fighting a fierce war with the terrorists in Iraq and Syria.

“We took into account the Kurds’ needs in the supplies of our arms to Iraq, but these supplies were made through the central government, through Baghdad,” Lavrov said at an annual news conference last month.
