The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) had intensified their airstrikes on ISIS cells in Syria’s central region, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on September 4.
According to the London-based monitoring group, the VKS wants to contain the terrorist group’s increasing activities in the region.
ISIS remnants in central Syria stepped up their attacks on government forces over the last few weeks. Dozens of Syrian service members were killed or injured in Homs, Hama, Raqqa and Deir Ezzor.
The SOHR said most of the terrorist group’s attacks had taken place in the following areas:
- The outskirts of the town of al-Sholah in western Deir Ezzor as well as in the countryside of the cities of al-Mayadin and al-Bakamal in the governorate’s southern part.
- Between the town of Hamimah and the T3 station in eastern Homs.
- In the countryside of the town of Resafa in southern Raqqa.
- In the countryside of the town of Ithriyah in eastern Hama.
Russian airstrikes and clashes with the Syrian Arab Army claimed the lives of more than 20 ISIS terrorists over the last few days only.
The VKS’ airstrikes could help contain ISIS’ growing threat in central Syria. Nevertheless, only a large ground operation could end the terrorist group’s presence in the region.
