On October 16 morning, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out several airstrikes on terrorists’ positions in Greater Idlib in northwest Syria.

Greater Idlib is a term used to describe the areas held by al-Qaeda groups and Turkish-backed factions in Idlib and its surroundings.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the Russian airstrikes targeted the towns of Tahtaya and Rakaya Sijneh in southern Idlib as well as the key town of Kabani in northern Lattakia.

“[The airstrikes] coincided with the flight of reconnaissance planes in the region’s [Greater Idlib] sky,” the London-based monitoring group’s report reads.

The Russian Aerospace Forces resumed its airstrikes on Greater Idlib, last week. The step was likely a result of the repeated provocations of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other terrorist groups occupying the region.

The airstrikes indicate that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) may soon launch a ground operation against HTS and its allies in Greater Idlib.
